Description
The Rotterdam rehearsal is a rehearsal recording from the peak tour of Europe 73, but it is a very rough recording, so it is no exaggeration to say that it is a “stepping stone for enthusiasts”. Due to its unique recording condition, it was speculated that “the staff secretly took a picture from the next room…”, but as you can see from the sounds of traffic on the street and the conversations of several people here and there, this was recorded by an enthusiastic enthusiast who staked out the rehearsal studio from outside. Yes, the conversations that appear everywhere were exchanges between fans who were together. It is unthinkable now, but in Europe in 1973, it was possible to stake out the studio where the Stones were rehearsing and record the sounds that leaked out. What a tranquil time it was. Not only were there traffic sounds and conversations everywhere due to this situation, but above all, there was a hissing noise (or rather a breathing noise) that entered throughout the entire film. This was the result of raising the recording level to the maximum in order to pick up the sounds leaking out. These factors combined to make this one of the roughest recordings of the Stones’ rehearsal recordings (laughs). It’s valuable, but it’s one of the most difficult recordings to get your hands on. Still, Mick’s voice was well captured, so there were some bold items, such as the analog LP “RATTLING ABOUT” with two different releases from the VGP label. All of these were releases from the cassette trade era, and it’s true that the already rough sound quality was made even more difficult to hear by the addition of dubbing. These items were released as a set of “listenable” parts, but in fact this recording was the equivalent of three CDs in length. However, (not surprisingly) there was no sign of a complete release (bitter smile), and it was only distributed among core enthusiasts. Captain Acid bravely attempted to overhaul such a fumie recording. He has remastered many Stones recordings online, and even said that it was “tough.” He corrected the pitch as much as possible (although he couldn’t fix it completely…), and adjusted the sound quality as much as possible. It’s still a high-barrier sound source to listen to, but it’s still a world apart from the items released in the past. It seems that the feeling of falling out of the cassette trade has been largely eliminated. Contrary to the state of such a rough sound source, there are flashes of inspiration even in loose rehearsals, which is typical of the Stones in 1973. It’s surprising to see Mick singing at a live performance level, such as “Brown Sugar” heard at the beginning. They also review “Rocks Off,” which was not performed in the actual performance, and while the performance has the same atmosphere as the previous year’s tour, Mick’s singing style is rare in Europe 1973 mode. What’s more, it’s a rare scene unique to rehearsals, where they try out “Hide Your Love” and “Can You Hear The Music.” The latter in particular has been rehearsed quite seriously, and not only Mick but also Taylor plays in the studio atmosphere, but it is clear that neither song will look good live. In the end, they were not able to perform it on stage, so the performance heard here is even more valuable. There are probably many enthusiasts who have never heard the Rotterdam rehearsal, which no longer exists as a current item due to its roughness. A complete and remastered version of such a valuable but difficult sound source has been released. De Doelen, Kleine Zaal, Rotterdam, Netherlands 18th – 29th August 1973 Disc 1(59:01) 1. Angie 2.
