Description
Even though it’s from the same year, 1966, the Honolulu ’66 recording is a well-known soundboard recording that allows you to enjoy a pure, unadulterated live performance from Brian Wilson’s time in the band, without any gimmicks like the official “GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT!”. Moreover, the youthful energy of the performance has been well-established since the LP era, and the original TSP release LP “SO MUCH YOUNGER THAN TODAY,” which this CD version is based on, was a huge hit despite being an aircheck recording. Later, with the advent of the CD era, the original broadcast recording was unearthed, dramatically improving the sound quality. It finally solidified its position as a standard live recording from the Brian Wilson era. However, it’s also true that when it first appeared, there were a series of releases with various problems, such as added reverb, hum noise due to being dubbed via VHS, and dropouts characteristic of vintage recordings. In fact, there were even items that were edited to conceal the dropouts. Because it’s such a classic recording, problems that had been overlooked were thoroughly re-examined by “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” resulting in the 2022 release “SO MUCH YOUNGER THAN TODAY,” which is literally the best version of the Honolulu concert. Like the many Stones live recordings that “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has supervised, the 2022 release has long since sold out. Moreover, it’s not just the best version of the Honolulu concert, but it also includes live recordings from Australia around the same time, making it a fulfilling 1966 live album, so why hasn’t it been reissued? There were even calls for a reissue like Phil Spell or Rubber Bowl to happen soon. As mentioned earlier, the Honolulu concert was already flawlessly produced, so the content of this release is the same as the 2022 version. While Brian’s guitar sound is often not very prominent in live recordings from this era, the fact that his guitar is loud throughout this Honolulu radio recording is a major attraction. This recording serves as a powerful reminder that he was the driving force behind this energetic performance. The added Sydney radio recording, recently unearthed as a rare 1966 recording, has garnered attention, but it was somewhat muffled and had a hum noise, giving it a distinctly digital sound. Therefore, “GRAF ZEPPELIN” undertook a thorough remastering to restore the analog feel characteristic of 1966. Here, the youthful performance shines brightly, and the inclusion of rare repertoire such as “She Said Yeah” and “That’s How Strong My Love,” which were not played in Honolulu, is a major draw. In the former, Mick’s voice sounds almost hoarse, a testament to his youth. The highlight is the band arrangement of “Play With Fire” with Brian on organ. The slightly chaotic performance in “Get Off Of My Cloud” is also youthful. Meanwhile, the Melbourne recording is a remastered version of a radio broadcast that was unearthed 20 years ago and became a hot topic. This recording boasts remarkably high sound quality, delivering a fantastic sound that rivals the Honolulu performance, vividly capturing the youthful yet raw energy of the band, and featuring a rare repertoire. The interview at the end even includes the interviewer’s uttered line, “Swingin’ pig!” Thus, this long-awaited re-release of a masterpiece, a full soundboard recording that more realistically captures the charm of the Stones’ 1966 live performance than the official “GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT!”. The jacket design also faithfully reproduces the feel of the original TSP release! Previous remaster notes: Mainly features the 1966 Honolulu performance. Also includes performances from Sydney and Melbourne in February of the same year. A 1966 live collection packed into one CD, exceeding 79 minutes. The CD title is an homage to the title of the original analog LP (TSP 012) featuring the Honolulu performance. Section 1: Honolulu, July 28, 1966 – Compared to previous releases, this is a better master with less hum noise. Frequent minor dropouts in the introduction and within songs have been corrected as much as possible. In particular, the dropouts that occurred in “The Last Time” and “Mother’s Little Helper” were not simply edited out, but restored seamlessly by adjusting the frequency band. Also, some parts of the introduction were cut in previous VGP releases to avoid dropouts. (On this release, around 0:17 on track 1, about 0.6 seconds are missing in the VGP version) Section 2: Sydney, February 18, 1966 (1st Show) The same master has been remastered again. Hum noise has been removed and the frequency range adjusted, making it much cleaner. Also, since the sound was quite digital with the hiss noise removed, EQ processing was done to return it to an analog texture. The buzzing sound that sometimes occurred intermittently around 3:15 in satisfaction has also been removed as seamlessly as possible (the processing marks are less noticeable than on the previous release) Section 3: Melbourne, February 24, 1966 (2nd Show) – Remastered from the old source. Some hum noise has been removed, making it cleaner, but there is no major difference. The slightly metallic sound is from the original.
