Description
Speaking of “BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY”, it is a title that has been popular for many years as a standard for outtakes and demo recordings of the early Stones when they belonged to Decca Records. Released in 1973 as a single LP on the famous American TMOQ label, it became a super hit title that was repeatedly reprinted over a long period of time. A CD reissue in LP form was previously released as TSP and VGP-307. This release contains plenty of rare tracks related to BRIGHT LIGHTS on 2 CDs. First of all, let’s start with DISC-1. 1 is a demo acetate record recorded at Carly Clayton Studio in October 1962. It was aired on British BBC Radio in 1988, and this time the pitch, which was previously about a semitone slower, has been corrected. 2 to 6 are demo recordings recorded at IBC Studio in March 1963 under the direction of Glyn Johns. It is a different transfer from the one recorded on the 2012 best album GRRR!, “Diddley Daddy” has no uneven rotation of the guitar in the intro, and “Bright Lights, Big City” has no high-pitched sound after 0:36. upgrade. The original master tape is said to be from Brian Jones’s belongings. 7-9 are from the BBC Saturday Club, September 1963. It was rebroadcast on “STONES AT THE BEEB” in 1985, and officially released on “ON AIR” in 2017. This ’17 version had a pseudo-stereo sound with excessive bass emphasis called Demix, but here it is recorded in the original mono sound. In “Come On”, the first note of Bill Wyman’s bass in the intro is missing in both the rebroadcast sound source and the release sound source, but it is recorded here as an upgrade without cutting. 10-13 are demo takes recorded at Dee Lane Lee Studio in November 1963. Uses audio transferred separately from “MAD SHADOWS” (DAC-180). 14 is an early version recorded on YD’s “THE BLACK BOX”. The sound quality is cleaner than the previous one, which had a bit of distortion in the high range and the sound image was concentrated on one channel, and the speed that was high has also returned to normal. 16 is the audio from the commercial and from the same video. 19 is a different version recorded only on the first edition of the British First LP in 1964, and is remastered from VGP-307. 20 is a demo sound source recorded at Dee Lane Lee Studio in March 1964. All good-sounding versions of this take start with a fade-in, but here it is recorded as an upgrade without a fade-in. 21 is a Radio Luxembourg radio show sound source from March 1964, from an acetate owned by Bill Wyman. This has been recorded so far at Chicago Chess, and is recorded from the new declick remastered sound source. 22 is from the BBC Saturday Club, April 1964. It was also included in “ON AIR” released in 2017, but the intro was cut off and it was recorded with an abrupt start take. This work uses an upgraded sound source of “READY STEADY STONES” (VGP-248), which was recorded slightly longer than “ON AIR” from the radio narration part. 23-26 are the familiar Chicago Chess sound sources from June 1964. Recorded with new declick remaster from mono acetate with high sound pressure. 27 is also a Chicago Chess sound source and is a stereo mix that was included in YD’s “THE BLACK BOX”, starting with Mick’s title call. 28-29 are sound sources from BBC Top Gear in July 1964. Although it is an AM broadcast sound source, it exists in very good condition. After all, it was recorded in ‘ON AIR’ in 2017, but here it is recorded with better sound quality, with no missing heads, no needle sounds, and no post-installed delay processing. 17-18, 30-31, and DISC-2 1-4 are sound sources from sessions held sporadically in 1964 under the name of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. In 1975, most of it was released as an unofficial version of “METAMORPHOSIS”, but these takes are a collection of early takes before overdubs such as orchestration were applied upon its release. 5 of DISC-2 is a version with a count and is a separate transfer from “MAD SHADOWS” (DAC-180). 6 includes a new declick remastered version of the existing acetate sound source. 7-8 are takes from the British LP “No. 2” and are newly released stereo remixes. The separation is quite different from traditional mixes. 9-11 are Chicago Chess sound sources from November 1964, and are recorded as new remastered sound sources from the same master as “MAD SHADOWS” (DAC-180). 12 is a rare rehearsal in Belfast in January 1965. 13, 17, 18, 20, 21, and 24 are unreleased stereo versions produced in 1966. “DARTFORD RENEGADES” (SCORPIO) is appearing for the first time, but this time it is a different transfer from the previously released best “MAD SHADOWS” (DAC-180), and all tracks have better treble clarity than the previous ones. You can check. 15 is a Chicago Chess sound source from May 1965, and was suddenly released in 2018 in a European edition box called “THE COMPLETE CHESS STUDIO SESSIONS”. The sound quality is the same as the previous release, but it is valuable because there are very few physical CD recordings of this song to date. 14 and 19 contain remastered sound sources with clear sound quality that have been newly declicked from mono acetate. 18 and 24 are off-vocal sound sources created for backing during TV appearances, and are included in YD’s “THE BLACK BOX” etc., but the ones included in this work are among the songs that were previously released and stood out. Recorded with a take with less uneven rotation. 22 and 24 are newly remastered from the same sound source as “MAD SHADOWS” (DAC-180). 28 is from the session during the production of “BETWEEN THE BUTTONS”, which was included only in the bonus single that came with the material book “WHITE BOOK” written by Dieter Hoffmann released in 1991. A quirky instrumental song featuring a kazoo is recorded from an acetate sound source. This work is a large collection containing 57 tracks on 2 CDs, totaling over 156 minutes. The sound quality has also been completely 24-bit digitally remastered, and each track has a clearer and cleaner sound image than before. Approximately 16 of the songs on the album will be recorded on VGP/DAC for the first time. All songs have been newly remastered, and you can listen to takes that had problems with cut-offs, noise, tape speed, etc. without stress. This is the new definitive edition of the masterpiece BRIGHT LIGHTS~.
