The third week of the Rolling Stones’ 2018 “NO FILTER” tour, the next stop after Southampton was Coventry. Speaking of the same place, I think that enthusiasts will remember the 1971 Farewell UK tour. For a long time, that day was appreciated as the only full stage sound source on the 1971 tour. Coventry was realized for the first time in a long time on this tour, but it was surprising that it was the first time in 47 years since then. Since then, the Stones have performed in their home country of the UK many times, but the “Farewell” with Coventry has continued for nearly 50 years since the previous tour. Perhaps because of this, Coventry in 2018 is literally filled with excitement. Fans who have been waiting for the Stones’ revisit have flocked to the venue. This can be clearly seen from the audience recording released this time. In other words, the excitement of the surroundings is picked up to a certain extent, but it is by no means an unpleasant sense of realism. At least it is different from the environment in Southampton, where the laughter of old ladies explodes regardless of the performance. Rather, the chorus is hot even for songs other than the major numbers, and it is made clear that the fans of Coventry who really love the Stones were packed in. That said, the chorus does not drown out the performance. The state of the audience recording this time is a balance that makes you feel the distance of the performance just after the show starts, but fortunately the sound image closes. Still, it is not enough to call it “on”. That is a negative point of this sound source. In addition, the sound quality itself has a fluffy texture as if it was covered with a veil, and it can be said that it is essential to add to the sound source. Therefore, at the time of this release, a considerable amount of equalization was added to the original audience recording, and it was reborn in a state where the disadvantages mentioned so far are largely eliminated. The biggest change is that the fluffy state as if covered with a veil was cleared at once, and the outlook for the performance became suddenly better. If you compare it with the original sound source, you can see at a glance that the sharp clarity was obtained. And it was the first show in 47 years in Coventry, but the start was good. However, Ronnie’s guitar playing was not quite ready. The most notable was “Tumbling Dice”. Here, he made a flashy sound that was off since the start of the tour. However, from the video of him on the same day, as he was projected on the screen at the venue, there was no sign of any ailment. Rather, he felt full of energy, which was typical of Ronnie, and he made the sound off with too much momentum. Perhaps that’s why, in the second show of the tour, “Dead Flowers”, he started playing with a lot of momentum, but once again, the phrases became suspicious and ended up tapering off. The band’s performance was stable from the opening on this day, and Mick had made a complete recovery, so Ronnie’s sound off was outstanding, which could be said to be the first time since the start of the tour. However, he also regained his composure in “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, playing a sharp solo and making the whole performance wonderful. In fact, the performance of “You Can’t…” on this day was the best, and when the performance of the ride was naturally reprised, it was long again. This is the engine of the Stones at full throttle. The following “Honky Tonk Women” also has momentum like never before. Until the first half of the show, why Ronnie’s playing was uneven, it may be that he was actually “floating”. After all, the day before was his birthday, and the day of the show was Charlie’s birthday. So Mick announced the birthdays of both members during the member introduction. The audience had already started singing “Happy Birthday Charlie” during the early part of the show, but here, Mick’s lead led the whole venue to sing together in a moving scene. On the other hand, Ronnie only had his birthday announced (this is similar to the pattern in 1976), but when you look at the video of the day, he didn’t get angry, but rather innocently celebrated Charlie, which is very typical of him. Following this peaceful scene, the Keith Corner opened with the first “You Got The Silver” of the tour. This is already perfect for Keith and the band now. Moreover, the audience in Coventry even sang along to this song, which is a real treat. The next classic, “Happy,” was a sloppy performance, which made the performance of this song even more outstanding. And from the middle onwards, the performance was excellent, with Mick at the center. In “Midnight Rambler,” the performance of the birthday duo of Charlie and Ronnie and the trinity of Mick was overwhelming. In addition to that, enjoy a cheerful birthday night with an upper feeling of sound quality! Live at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, UK 2nd June 2018 TRULY AMAZING/PERFECT SOUND Disc 1 (62:23) 1. Intro 2.
