Description

RAINBOW in the 90’s when the heroic Ritchie Blackmore showed his last shine as an HR guitarist. A multi-camera video showing the scene is now available. This work was filmed at “Gothenburg performance on August 7, 1996.” This is the spectacular audience shot. The footage of this show has been known in fragments, but this work is the complete version that has only recently appeared. It is also a multi-camera editing work that makes full use of images from two cameras. Before we look at the quality, first of all, the position of the show. Although there was only one RAINBOW studio work in the 90s, the activity itself spanned about 20 months. During that time, the members and show format have changed, so let’s review the overall picture here. 1995《August release of “The Solitary Stranger”》・September 30th – November 4th: Europe #1 (25 performances) ← *Official video・November 11th – 23rd: Japan (9 performances) 1996・June 27th – July 7th: South America (8 performances) ・July 21st – August 11th: Europe #2 (13 performances) ←★Here★ [Chuck Berghi leaves → John Miceli joins] 1997 February 20th – March 19th, 2018: North America (18 performances), May 31st: Denmark (final performance) [RAINBOW disbanded → BLACKMORE’S NIGHT started] This is a panoramic view of RAINBOW’s activities in the 90s. It has been touring the world intermittently, and the Gothenburg performance of this work is, so to speak, the “final stage of the mid-1996 period”. This was the 10th concert of “Europe #2”. This work, which contains such a show, is truly a spectacular sight. As mentioned above, the two camera angles are mixed, the main camera is from the “back seat facing the front of the stage”, and the sub camera is “a diagonal angle from the right side (Greg Smith side)”. Although the angles are different, both have a high vantage point, passing far above the heads of the audience seated on the first floor and looking directly at the stage without any obstructions. What’s even more impressive is the bold zoom and sense of stability. As expected, the video quality is from the analog era, so if you pull it too hard, your face will get crushed, but if you push it too close, the upper bodies of Richie and Dougie will fill the screen. You can clearly see the facial expressions and Richie’s fingertips. And even though the zoom was pushing the limits of the equipment available at the time, the screen did not shake. There is no need to dodge his raised arms due to the spectacular view, but he is probably also using a tripod. The solid sense of stability makes me wonder, “Maybe this is a photo shoot by someone involved?” Even the audio is amazing, so it’s Mie Maru. I don’t know if it’s a microphone attached to the camera or a completely separate recording, but anyway, the extremely thick core dives straight in, and even at its peak, it doesn’t waver and is glossy. I can tell that it’s an Odins voice in terms of timbre, but it’s a great recording with a lot of closeness that suits any viewpoint. It is a full show unique to the middle period (1996) that is depicted with such exquisite quality. Speaking of the iconic video of the 90’s, it is the professional shot of the Dueldorf performance, which was also made official, so let’s organize the set while comparing it. DEEP PURPLE・Gillan era: Perfect Strangers/Smoke On The Water・Phase III: Mistreated (*)/Burn RAINBOW Classics・Ronnie era: Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll/Man On The Silver Mountain/The Temple of the King・Graham era: Since You Been Gone/Joe era: Difficult to Cure/Maybe Next Time (*)/Street Of Dreams (*) Solitary Stranger/Wolf To The Moon/Still I’m Sad/Black Masquerade/Ariel *Note: Songs marked with an asterisk (*) cannot be seen in the official video “BLACK MASQUERADE.” …and it looks like this. The show was a mix of “Maybe Next Time” and “Street Of Dreams,” which they started playing after their performance in Japan, and “Mistreated,” which was not seen in Japan. Also, the structure is full of 1996-ness, especially the opening with “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Lastly, let’s briefly summarize the evolution of the opening song. ・Spotlight Kid: Europe #1/Japan (up to Kitakyushu) → Too Late For Tears: Japan (after Yokohama)/South America → Long Live Rock’n’Roll: Europe #2 only (★This work★) → Spotlight Kid: All of 1997 A full show unique to 1996, which is a bit different from “BLACK MASQUERADE” and the Japan performance. This is a multi-camera work that allows you to experience it at its best from two special seats. A performance masterpiece that will represent the mid-term of RAINBOW in the 90s. Spectacular audience shot of “Gothenburg performance on August 7, 1996”. Fragmentary footage has been known for a long time, but this work is a complete version that has only recently appeared, and is a multi-camera editing work that makes full use of two cameras. Both cameras offer spectacular views with no obstacles in the way, and their bold zooming and stability are superb, as if they were using a tripod. Furthermore, the sound that gives you a sense of closeness is also superb. It’s a 1996-like show that starts with “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and you can also enjoy “Maybe Next Time,” “Street Of Dreams,” and “Mistreated,” which you can’t see on “BLACK MASQUERADE.” Live at Rondo, Gothenburg, Sweden 7th August 1996 1.
