Description
The live performances of RAINBOW accompanying the release of “STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES” in 1982 have been unearthed, and several sound sources and videos of the US and European tours have become known. However, due to the existence of official videos, the types of live sources were limited until about 10 years ago. However, regarding the performances in Japan, several titles have been known since the analog era and the beginning of CDs as collector’s items. Among them, the Tokyo performances that took place over two consecutive days have been central in both quality and quantity of items to this day. At the moment, it is difficult to think of any other source that allows you to relive those two days in an ideal way, other than the sound sources featured here. This work “SAME OLD DREAM” records the performance at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on October 22, the final day of the 1982 “STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES” Japan tour, from an audience master that was previously unknown even among traders. There have been many recordings of this day for a long time, and fans have enjoyed “TOKYO 2 NIGHTS”, known since the analog era, and the masterpiece “CATCH THE NIGHT”. However, this work has realized a superior recording that surpasses all of the previous releases. The sound is captured on the same level as the previous day’s recording “RIPPED APART”, and the sound balance and stability are comparable. While the previous day’s recording was enjoyed with a line source-like feel, this recording has a lively presence and atmosphere that makes you feel the power of the performance and the enthusiasm of the audience more directly. The excitement and enthusiasm of “Spotlight Kid” is of course wonderful, but even “Miss Mistreated”, which even had a somewhat modest impression, is recorded with a dynamism that is one step ahead of the rest in this recording, and listeners will be surprised that “it was such a live-like song”. In addition, the keyboard intro at the beginning of “I Surrender”, the tight drums, and the excitement of the audience are recorded with a force that cannot be compared to the previous releases. Just thinking about being able to listen to the live show to the end with this sound makes me excited! Richie’s guitar was a wonderful listen in “RIPPED APART”, but in this recording, Bobby Rondinelli’s drums are lively (the cymbals felt noisy in the first three songs on the previously released version, but there is no such problem in this version), and the whole band plays tight and energetically as if he is drawn to him. Not only the aforementioned “I Surrender” but also “Can’t Happen Here” and “All Night Long” can be enjoyed with eye-opening musical sounds. The new songs “Tearin’ Out My Heart” and “Power” are also reproduced with more power and dynamism than the album, and the energetic live performance that is typical of RAINBOW is played. The main listening point of this recording is “Difficult To Cure” in the middle. Richie’s guitar resonates with a fresh tone despite the noise of the audience, and the listener will be fascinated by this alone. The improvisation solos in the song use a variety of tones, from slow to fast, to delicate to aggressive, and enjoy the exquisitely controlled guitar. David Rosenthal’s keyboard solo in the middle is also reproduced with amazing realism. The highlights of the day, “Catch The Rainbow” and “MAN On The Silver Mountain”, are both recorded with great sound. The former is melodic and romantic, and the latter is closer to the album, allowing you to enjoy Joe’s skillful vocals. The climax of the live is the promised “Smoke On The Water” and “Kill The King” featuring a guitar crash. At the end, the highlight of “A Light In The Black” also pops out, closing the live with enthusiasm and excitement! This work, which cuts out the final day of the Budokan, which was the highlight of the “STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES” tour, with the best sound that can be said to be the best, is a must-listen for all RAINBOW fans. Although the ’82 live show has generally been described as “a little low-energy,” this is an outstanding documentary title that proves just how amazing the Budokan live show was!
