Description

December 2021 marks the 45th anniversary of the legendary first visit to Japan. A special album commemorating the anniversary year will be released on 2CD. The special edition includes the performance “December 16, 1976: Nippon Budokan (evening session)”. Yes, it is the 45th anniversary special edition of the stereo soundboard album “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” that embodies the dreams of enthusiasts! If you have read this article, you may already know the contents, as it is a rare hit title in the RAINBOW related world. However, we will start from the basics so that those who have never experienced it can understand it as it is the best one for beginners. “December 16: Nippon Budokan (evening session)” is the final performance that should be remembered even in the legendary first visit to Japan. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces that has been adopted in the masterpiece “ON STAGE” and has been conveyed in many superb audience recordings. On the other hand, this show is also famous for the fact that many soundboards were left behind. “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” is a live album that utilizes the best master and realizes the longest version with the highest quality. However, not all of the remaining sound boards are used. First, let’s organize the sound boards that recorded this day. ・SBD#1: Part of the main part of the official “ON STAGE” ・SBD#2: Cassette owned by Cozy ・SBD#3: “THE END OF RISING” ・SBD#4: Three songs from “SOUNDBOARD ARCHIVES 1976” ・SBD#5: Official “ON STAGE” Deluxe Edition CD2 and above, 5 types of sound boards exist. Among these, the highest quality is “SBD#5 (credited as Osaka on the official edition, but the correct name is Nippon Budokan)”. As it was officially excavated, the official quality, which was precisely mixed from the multi, was enormous. However, it was regrettable that it was not fully recorded. Perhaps to fit it on one CD, or perhaps because there was a flaw in the master, the second half of the show (from Stargazer to the keyboard/drum solo/Still I’m Sad parts) was cut off, making it an incomplete version. “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” compensates for the missing parts as much as possible with Cozy Tape’s “SBD#2”. In addition, the few minutes without a soundboard (the end of the drum solo and Over The Rainbow announcing the end of the show) were supplemented with the best audience recording to create the longest full live album. The “Complete Version ON STAGE” that was born in this way was sold out and out of print in an instant. The remastered version released less than a year later was a huge hit and disappeared from the market in an instant. This work is the latest and highest peak version of such a popular edition. In commemoration of the 45th anniversary, they attempted another remaster, but the point this time is the precision of their obsession. The previous remastered version, “Rising Arrow-064,” had perfect pitch and phase, and was a high-level finish that would normally be impossible to tamper with. To upgrade from there, we tried noise reduction this time. Of course, normal mechanical noise reduction would remove even the subtleties of the performance sound and change the tone. So this time, we pursued “the limit of not affecting the performance sound.” We found and fine-tuned even the noises hidden in the shadows of the performance sound, such as high-frequency hiss noise and low-frequency hum noise. However, we polished it up with an obsessive task of starting over if the performance sound changed even a little. As a result, the sound that was born is certainly the best ever. It is hard to say that the official part of “ON STAGE” Dela Eddie (mainly the first half) has changed significantly, but the Cozy Tape part (second half) is clearly different. Even just listening to it, the hissing hiss has been significantly reduced, and the buzzing hum that was only noticeable at high volume is no longer felt. Only the miraculous masterpieces stand out from the pitch black silence. There is no need to say much about the show contents. That full show, which can be said to be the pinnacle of British hard rock. The greatest stereo soundboard ever is poured into the brain of the great performances that have been repeated hundreds and thousands of times. The upgraded version was intended to check the sound, but before you know it, it was incorporated into the performance and you thought, “The final Budokan is amazing after all.” You can enjoy that thrill again. In celebration of the 45th anniversary of their first visit to Japan, they did everything possible in 2021. Since the noise reduction was pushed to the very limit, it might be better to say that they had “reached the pinnacle of the needle tip” rather than saying that they had been “reborn into something completely different.” However, the more they challenge it, the more valuable the album “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE” is. The ideal of British hard rock and the crystallization of a maniac’s dream. The longest stereo soundboard recording of “December 16, 1976: Nippon Budokan (evening session)”. This is the highest peak update of “DEFINITIVE ON STAGE:” which combines the official SBD of the “ON STAGE” Deluxe Edition and Cozy Powell’s treasured SBD tape. The conventional version was already excellent, but this work challenges the noise reduction to the limit where the performance sound does not change. High-frequency hiss and low-frequency hum noise have been significantly reduced, and the extremely thick soundboard sound has been made to sound clear and sharp. This is the ultimate live album to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the first visit to Japan. (Remastering memo) High-frequency and low-frequency noise have been removed from the Cozy tape section. The hum noise in the low range has disappeared, making it slightly easier to hear. The frequency band has been slightly adjusted. The low range has been reinforced in particular.
