Description

Ritchie Blackmore’s sixth visit to Japan and Rainbow’s fourth visit to Japan was in 1981. The tour included eight shows, more than the previous year’s Japan tour, in major cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, as well as Fukuoka and Kyoto. Of course, Kyoto has been a place where Ritchie has performed in the past, but this year, he performed in Kyoto only once. That was the concert recorded on this album, held at Kyoto Kaikan No. 1 Hall on August 24, 1981. This year’s Rainbow came to Japan with Cozy Powell, who had left the band after the previous year’s Monsters of Rock, and Bob Rondinelli took over as drummer, and John Lynn Turner took over as vocalist to replace Yassan, who had left the band during recording. This was also Don Airey’s last visit to Japan as part of Rainbow. The tour was in conjunction with the release of the album “I Surrender” (Difficult To Cure), which was released in Japan in March, and the Japan tour took place after that. This work is a complete recording of the Kyoto performance on August 24, 1981. You can see that the venue is very excited from the opening BGM before the show starts. Even though he had only just come to Japan the previous year, Richie’s popularity in Japan is once again felt. The opening number is “Spotlight Kid” from the new album at that time. Richie’s play, which is full of this sense of speed, is particularly noteworthy. In addition, four songs from the new album, “I Surrender”, “Can’t Happen Here”, and “No Treatment” are included in the set list. It is a perfect promotion for the new work, a complete change from the previous year, and the fans who attended the venue at the time would have been very satisfied. “Spotlight Kid” was also performed at the Rainbow concert held in 2016, but the point is that what you can hear here is the original members at the time of recording. Although this work is an audience recording / first appearance sound source, it is recorded with wonderful high sound quality, and the atmosphere of the day is completely recorded from the BGM before the show to the BGM after the concert. At the end, “Maybe Next Time” is played in the venue, but since it is unclear whether it is an actual performance or background music towards the end of the show, it is summarized in the track as “Outroduction”.
