Rainbow/Fukuoka 1981 Another Repair

“NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE” to be released was recorded with very high quality throughout, but the surprise that occurred at the end of the live performance was not recorded because the taper had finished recording. On that day, two songs were played as an encore, “All Night Long” and “Smoke On The Water,” and “Over The Rainbow” was also played, so it was natural for everyone in the audience to think, “This is it.” I must have thought, “It’s the end of the show.” In fact, most of the sound sources that include this Fukuoka performance end with “Over The Rainbow”, and there is only one type of source that is known to date that includes the surprise “Fire” (in the first place, the source that includes “Fire” Its very existence is miraculous.) This time, considering the importance of the live performance and the preciousness of the sound source, this other sound source used to supplement “NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE” has also been completely repaired from the original master. We have decided to release it! In contrast to “NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE,” which had a well-balanced and easy-to-listen sound with missing high frequencies and solid midrange and bass, this source has a strong low-frequency input and is slightly distorted. However, the position of the taper seems to be closer to the stage than in “NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE”, and it can be said that the feature of this recording is that you can feel the power of the live performance more directly. The pitch, which was more than a semitone higher in the original master, has of course been adjusted correctly, and the outline of the sound has been sharpened, making it easier to listen to. Joe’s vocals and Richie’s guitar are also captured with a very clear sound, and you can get a clear picture of the performance. This recording can be said to be an interesting sample not only for its value as a document that includes “Fire”, but also for its raw and vivid sense of presence and the taste typical of a live tape. “Spotlight Kid”, which opens the live show, is very powerful, and you can clearly feel the joy of the audience who have been waiting for the band to appear. The reaction and excitement of the audience was excellent for “I Surrender” and “Man On The Silver Mountain,” and you can understand that Joe was already becoming recognized as the voice of RAINBOW in Japan through the album. “Can’t Happen Here”, which was captured with a strong sound from the intro, can be said to be one of the highlights of this recording! In the second half of the live, the medley of “Lost In Hollywood” (also pay attention to Bobby Rondinelli’s solo) and “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” are sounds that make the listener listen more thoroughly than they expected. Encore “Smoke On The Water” seems like the original sound source conveys the excitement of the venue more realistically. The flow from the same song to “Over The Rainbow” and the aforementioned surprise “Fire” is natural as there is no change in sound quality, and you can listen through it easily. Although it yields to “NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE” in terms of sound symmetry and cohesion, the preciousness of this recording, which contains the only “Fire”, is irreplaceable.
