Description
This is an audience recording from the Warfield Theater on May 23, 1986. While there are other live recordings that were created by taking problematic sections from the Hamburg performance on August 31, this recording has been remastered to correct pitch and audio dropouts from the original master. The result is the most faithful representation of this live performance. The recording itself is not particularly flawed, and the sound quality is quite high-quality and enjoyable. This recording is a must-listen, as it is already number one on the Hit & Run and Parade tours. This early live performance differs in many ways from the later Parade tour. The performance of “Around the World in a Day” is longer. While “Paisley Park” was played at the First Avenue concert on March 3, 1986, it is not performed here. “Raspberry Beret” begins with Prince’s countdown and is also longer. Finally, “Alexa De Paris,” which was later omitted, is played. Prince’s guitar is explosive, making this a wonderful performance. “Controversy,” including “Holly Rock,” features an extended intro in which Prince pauses the band and calls Miko to play cutting. “Mutiny” also features Eric Leeds’ solo, which seems to have ended, followed by Prince restarting the performance several times with a “gugga!”, and even Jerome restarting with a “gugga!”. The “Dream Factory” verse is also incredibly extended, with Wendy and Lisa chanting along. André Simone then appears onstage for a rare rendition of “The Dance Electric.” While Prince’s vocals are briefly included, the track also features a blend of André’s choppy bass and Prince’s rock-esque guitar, accompanied by a spastic horn blast and Jerome and the others’ manly “The Dance Electric” chorus, creating a truly epic performance. “Under the Cherry Moon” also features a full, fully-sung intro. “Anotherloverholenyohead” features finger cymbals. “Soft and Wet” is identical to the studio version, except for the drum intro. “I Wanna Be Your Lover” is also extended, with a similar development to the studio version. Prince seems to have forgotten the lyrics to “Girls and Boys,” singing in a scat-like style. The live version, which could be called an extended version, ends with Prince chanting “Girls and Boys,” followed by a rapid-fire “Life Can Be So Nice.” “Life Can Be So Nice” also ends with just the drums. Instead of “1999,” it’s “Purple Rain.” While “America” gives the impression of not always being performed the same live, it’s uniquely cool, featuring the first appearance of JB’s “Cold Sweat” phrase. There’s also a different drum solo by Prince than in the music video. Sheila E. was supposed to be onstage, but she wasn’t there. “Holy Rock” had the audience chanting along to the vocals, with stop-and-go riffs, never-before-heard horn parts, and Prince singing Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three’s “The Roof Is On Fire” for the first time in live performances, resulting in a funk jam you won’t find anywhere else. The cheers for “A Love Bizarre” erupt, suggesting Sheila’s arrival, but it also sounds like Wendy’s vocals. However, Eric’s sax solo and Miko’s guitar chops are incredibly funky. Then, the band pauses, letting the drummers take over and play guitar, during which the guitar chop intro for “Kiss” plays, and the performance begins. This is a wonderful extended version of “Kiss.” The final song, “Love or Money,” ends midway through the performance. As a bonus, although not by The Revolution, it’s a rare performance from the Sign of the Times tour, featuring Sheila E. singing “Koo Koo” backed by the Prince band.
