Description

In 1972, Floyd toured the UK, Japan and the US on a large scale with the “Unfinished Madness” tour. This is the first time that Floyd has toured Europe in May of the same year, and the show at the rock festival “Amsterdam Rock Circus” held in the Netherlands on May 22nd has been recorded in high quality audience recording. The existence of the tape was known, but this is the first time it has been made into a record, and it is a valuable sound source that many fans will encounter for the first time. As with the performance on May 21st in Germany the day before (already recorded by DOUBLE BUBBLE), on this day they did not dare to play the familiar “Madness” from 1972, but instead performed classic numbers such as “Atom Heart Mother”, “One Of These Days”, “Eugene”, “Echoes” and “Mystery” in front of an outdoor audience. Although it is an average level audience recording at the time, the sound image is stable, and I’m sure that enthusiastic collectors will be satisfied. It’s a shame that the ending of Echoes was cut, but the quality is good enough to listen to all the way through, and the set itself is rare, so it’s a great title for enthusiasts. As a bonus disc, there is a DVD with a color live video of the same day, but only one song, “Mystery”. It is rumored that it was broadcast as a digest video of the festival by local TV, but it is a fairly high-quality film for an audience video in 1972. At the beginning, there is some flashy tracking noise, and there are some scenes where the sound is distorted and there are some parts where the sound is missing for a moment, but the overall quality is excellent, and the sound and screen are perfectly synchronized, so you can enjoy the video without stress. However, perhaps because the video is quite dark, the screen processing is done in a way that makes you feel the era, like ELP’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” video (although it’s not that outrageous), so you may be disappointed when you see it for the first time. (The second half ends up sounding like the end of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”) However, the advanced zoom-ins from a distance that you wouldn’t expect from a regular film camera, as well as the scene of the gong engulfed in flames and the silhouettes of the band members, are beautifully recorded, making this a must-see for enthusiasts, even though it’s only 9 minutes long. Live at Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam, Netherlands 22nd May 1972 1. Atom Heart Mother 2. One Of These Days 3. Careful With That Axe, Eugene 4. Echoes 5.
