Description

A shocking upper sound source has appeared in Pink Floyd’s 1972 performance in Lyon, France! At the time of the 2007 release, the source that was thought to be no better than this due to the use of the 1st Gen will be covered with a reel tape excavated from an unexpected place! December 10, 1972, Lyon, France. As you know, this day was the final performance of the “prototype version of “THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON”” which had been test-played for about 11 months since its world premiere, and it was also the day when all live activities scheduled for 1972 came to an end. For Floyd in 1972, this was an important day that could be said to be the “summary of the year.” However, looking back at the history of the recordings, there was a history of the fact that recordings of this day were difficult to evaluate properly, as tape traders did not have good sound quality until a long time ago. The situation changed completely in early 2007, when a 1st Gen recording that instantly blew away the mediocre B-grade recordings that had been in circulation until then was suddenly released online, and this triggered a sudden surge in attention. The 1st Gen recording from this time was released on the world’s fastest record, “END & AIM: LYON 1972” in April 2007. It was originally a 1972 concert, but with the appearance of this title, it would not be an exaggeration to say that this Lyon performance, which concludes 1972, has finally received a fair evaluation. However, although the source from 2007 was uncut and had no problems with the second half of the show, including the sound check between songs, the final performance of the first part of the show, the first half of the show, “THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON / Prototype”, which is the most important part, had some aspects that were difficult to say were perfect in quality, such as noise caused by the master at around 3:57 in “Us And Them” and an unpleasant scene where the sound cuts out for a few seconds like a tape flip at around 3:17 and 3:32 in “Any Colour You Like”. A report that cast a stone on the situation came in the early spring of 2019. A fan discovered an old Scotch 7-inch reel tape on an overseas online auction site. The information about the contents of the reel said that on side A was a TV recording of the Spencer Davis Group, and on side B was Pink Floyd’s 1972 Lyon performance. Floyd fans overseas raised donations and won the reel at auction. When played, it was recorded with a master level sound quality that clearly surpassed that of the 1st Gen tape released in 2007, even though it was the same source. Moreover, what was surprising was that there were no two cut points in the middle of “Any Colour You Like” that existed in the 2007 source where the sound was cut off (!!!), and the opening “Speak To Me” was also the longest version recorded about 30 seconds before (!!!!!)! The more you listen to it, the more you feel the upper feeling of the sound here and there. It was a great excavation reel tape, but the original sound of the reel released online had a unique profile that was not present in the 2007 source, such as “Breathe (Reprise)” and “Us And Them”, where the sound was slightly disturbed in the middle. It was also attractive that it had a mysterious quality that stimulated the listener’s imagination as to how the sound was left on this reel. However, such difficult parts could be fully compensated for by equalization adjustments and digital patches of the 2007 version source, so if this is made into a master and the parts that are complemented are perfectly treated, the 1972 Lyon sound source with the highest sound quality ever recorded and the longest recording, and the quality that exceeds the public sound source, should be born. …Yes, the world’s fastest sound record of this is the 1972 Lyon, where the final performance of “THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON / Prototype” is revived in a perfect form without any sound leakage for the first time in history, with a full upper feeling! The surprising sense of renewal due to the obvious higher sound quality begins with the happy topic of the longest recording of the scene from the beginning of the disc. The recording of “Speak To Me” starts about 30 seconds earlier than the 2007 version source, and you can feel the difference between the vivid documentary of the day in the rise of the palpitation sound and the surrounding noise. When “Breathe” starts, the sharp and tough performance sound and range expansion unique to reel tape, as well as the improved transparency, are remarkable, and you will realize that the dazzling sound contrast has already surpassed the 2007 version. And the best part of this day is “On The Run”. As you know, this long jam battle with a full sense of drive, which you can hardly hear on other days, is unfolded with the strongest high-resolution massive sound ever, so it is irresistible, and you will surely be deeply impressed by the possibility of this song shown in the final performance of the prototype version being able to be heard in such good condition. “Time” also creates rich harmonies in the low range with a clear sound close up, and the sudden microphone malfunction on the Rick side (※ the sound becomes distant for a few seconds) around 2:23-28 can be enjoyed with an increasingly vivid documentary sound image. “Breathe (Reprise)” had a scene of poor sound quality due to deterioration of the reel tape around 00:26-34, but this was perfectly compensated for at the same point in the 2007 version, completely resolving the audible discomfort. Also, “Us And Them” had sporadic scenes where the original sound was rough due to deterioration of the tape, but this was also successfully restored completely by the masterful techniques of a dedicated engineer (※If I didn’t make this note, it would probably be thought that this was the original sound). And in “Any Colour You Like”, which has the longest performance of over 9 minutes, a surprising moment awaits. Yes, this reel sound source does not have the two choppy scenes that were in the 2007 version source, and the performance sound remains completely uninterrupted. The romantic guitar tune that continues to play resoundingly from the beginning to the middle of the show also invites you to a higher level of intellectual excitement, and when “Eclipse” ends while being wrapped in that intonation, the listener will surely feel a deep sense of satisfaction that they have finished listening to the first part of the final performance of 1972 perfectly for the first time. It is a dark side set where musical ecstasy that is sure to burn your body awaits you many times, and each song is a different order of magnitude more satisfying than what you have heard in the 2007 version so far, so I would like you to listen to it with your eyes open. The second part is also filled with a wonderful reel sound that surpasses the 2007 version. As you can already see in the tuning scene of track (1), the sound image that was too direct and slightly distorted in Sirene-244 has become a natural sound that is easy to hear, and even the finer check sounds can be heard more than ever before. The robust sound that can be experienced in “One Of These Days” is sure to make everyone who hears it tremble with unknown excitement. Not only is the bass deep, but the fact that you can better grasp what is happening in the movement of the bass is also a major topic of this 2019 reel source, and it also dramatically improves the musical understanding of this performance. “Careful with that Axe, Eugene” is a scene where you can feel the spread and growth of the sound at its highest value. The scene of Roger’s poetry reading, which is unique to this time, also jumps out with the most impactful sound image ever, and the collage with the eerie sound that rings behind the agitation, and the sound drama that they unfolded this night for over 12 minutes becomes an increasingly real shock and swallows us up. The tuning scene that comes back after the performance also has a glossy and thick tone to each instrument, and in the beginning of “Echoes”, the texture of the sound emitted by each instrument appears with an ease of listening that updates Sirene-244, and the latter half, which had severe sound distortion and noise, can be listened to with an easier-to-listen-to upper sound while retaining the realism of the live sound that the master had absorbed. Indeed, at this time, we do not know how this 2019 reel source was recorded and remains to this day, nor its origin or exact generation. It is likely that this is not the master, but it is possible that it is a master clone made by reel-to-reel similar to it, and even if it was the 1st Gen, it could be considered a “first generation with different conditions” that was copied from the master each time to a different person, with different tapes of different dates and grades. In any case, the advantage of the sound quality being clearly better and longer than the 2007 version source burns an exceptionally sharp vision into the listener, and as a research material, it is the final performance of 1972 that gives deeper knowledge and answers than ever before.
