Description
The 1970 Fillmore West is one of the most important sound sources of early Floyd, known for the sound board that was left behind. The complete version has been significantly upgraded and is now available. [The longest and complete version made up of three masters] This work is, of course, the “Fillmore West performance on April 29, 1970”. Since the unofficial analog LP “FILLMORE WEST” appeared in the early 1970s, it has been a major staple that has produced many existing releases. Various upgrades have been made, but the most recent one is “DEFINITIVE FILLMORE WEST 1970”, which caused a whirlwind last year. In addition to upgrading the sound board, it was the longest and complete version made by making full use of the best masters of the three existing recordings. The impact spread across the sea to enthusiasts all over the world, and one of them stood up and said, “I can do it better.” This work is a further upgraded version created by that enthusiast with great care. It is a true definitive version that has been thoroughly polished! This work basically inherits the concept of “DEFINITIVE FILLMORE WEST 1970 (hereafter, the previous work)”. However, it has been remade from scratch with an exceptionally high level of precision. In order to explain the precision, let’s start with the basic concept. As mentioned above, the key to this work is “three existing recordings”. There are three types: RECORDER 1: Soundboard (mono), RECORDER 2: Stereo audience, RECORDER 3: New AUD “Randy Reels (mono)”. These were used as “first half of the show = RECORDER 1”, “second half of the show = RECORDER 2”, and “everywhere supplement = RECORDER 3”, and were assembled into the longest version of the live album. Although similar edited versions had existed before, other performances were used for supplementation. What was groundbreaking about the previous work was that it was the first time in history that it was “assembled with only one show’s sound source” by using the newly discovered “RECORDER 3” (at the time). However, even though it was groundbreaking, it was not 100% complete. The aforementioned core mania thoroughly poked around the corners of the box and made improvements after improvements. That is this work. [The “true definitive board” created by the careful work of the core maniacs. To be sure there is no misunderstanding here, this work is “not” a remaster of the previous work. The composition and method are the same as the previous work, and the core mania is also based on the previous work. However, it is a blueprint, and this work is a “rebuilt board” that has been reconstructed by starting over from the selection and polishing of the material. Now, let’s review the composition. RECORDER 1 (first half) ・DISC 1: Grantchester Meadows / Astronomy Domine / Cymbaline / Atom Heart Mother / The Embryo ・DISC 2: Green Is the Colour / Careful With That Axe, Eugene RECORDER 2 (second half) ・DISC 2: Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun / A Saucerful of Secrets / Interstellar Overdrive *The supplements by “RECORDER 3” are diverse, so I’ll omit them. …And so on. First of all, “RECORDER 1/2” uses the nostalgic masterpiece “INTERSTELLAR ENCORE (OMS 002/3)”. Of course, it’s not just brought over as is, but has been carefully mastered, which is the first upgrade point. Not only is the overall sound more natural than the “previous work”, but it has also been finely and meticulously compensated. For example, “Astronomy Domine”. In the previous work, the sound became a little muffled at 3 minutes 40 seconds, and momentary distortion and dropouts due to tape deterioration were found here and there (if you have the previous work, please check 4:21, 6:32, and 7:44). However, in this work, all of those parts have been restored. Of course, since it is a vintage recording, there are limitations, but this core maniac has made more than 70 patches (!) and more than 100 restorations (!?). And the patch material is also insistent on the real thing. In the past, stereo versions of “RECORDER 1” were also sold, but the original was a mono recording. There is a history of it being made stereo during the distribution process, and as a result, the same performance was unintentionally recorded on the left and right channels (in other words, two copies were left on one tape). This maniac “used the left channel as a base and replaced the deteriorated points with the right channel.” [Shocking perfection that does not overlook even the slightest editing mistake] Even up to this point, I am overwhelmed by the greatness of this work, but it is still in the “polishing of the material” stage. The next “assembly stage” is also upgraded. It is a so-called compensation work in “RECORDER 3”, and there are two particularly large places. One is before the first song “Grantchester Meadows” starts. It was patched in “RECORDER 3”, which first appeared in the “previous work”, but here the taper was talking to someone and the recording was paused with the traces of words such as “Take down the recording equipment” and “Don’t erase it”. In the “previous work”, the pause was connected as it was, but if you don’t know the original, it may sound choppy. The mania who produced this work has re-emphasized the style that can be listened to seamlessly. The other place is the MC part before the start of “Cymbaline”. This was a mistake in the “previous work”, where a tuning scene was inserted between the MC where Roger talks about “Cymbaline” and the French movie “More”. In this work, it is reconnected at the correct position before the story begins. I will not go into the details of this very famous concert, but the familiar performance sounds completely different when enjoyed with the quality of this work. The freshness of the master itself is reborn with a fresh natural feeling and seamless glossiness. And the editing technique is so good that you cannot feel the connection. It is a live album that is truly worthy of being called the “true definitive album.” Fillmore West, San Francisco, California, USA 29th April 1970 UPGRADE Disc 1 (65:04) 01. Busted 02.
