Description
PINK FLOYD’s last live in Japan is here. The “last performance in Japan” was at the Nagoya Rainbow Hall (now Nippon Gaishi Hall) on March 11, 1988. It was the final day of “A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON JAPAN TOUR 1988”. As this was their first monumental Japan tour in 16 years, we have archived various live albums in our shop. First, let’s organize the collection by date.・March 2nd: Nippon Budokan “THE GREAT GIG IN THE BUDOKAN”・March 3rd: Nippon Budokan “THE GREAT GIG IN THE BUDOKAN”・March 4th: National Yoyogi Stadium “SIGNS OF LIVES”・March 5th: National Yoyogi Stadium “SIGNS OF LIVES”・March 6th: National Yoyogi Stadium “SIGNS OF EVERLIFE”・March 8th: Osaka Castle Hall “A MOMENTARY LAPSE IN OSAKA”・March 9th: Osaka Castle Hall “A MOMENTARY LAPSE IN OSAKA”・March 11th: Nagoya Rainbow Hall [This work] *Note: Only representative works on each day. That’s a total of 8 performances. Our shop has reported on 5 performances in Tokyo and 2 performances in Osaka, but this is the first time we’ve seen a Nagoya performance. This is the last live album in the entire performance collection. This work has a truly wonderful audience sound in terms of quality. The original master, brought by a unique route, was directly converted to CD, and a clear and dynamic sound world spreads out. Although the detailed recording position is not known, the core of the solid musical sound reaches straight and the details are vivid. Although there is no sense of distance, the slight sound of the venue also colors the sound with a glossy effect, rather creating a sense of scale. This tour was released because it had the miraculous sounds of “THE GREAT GIG IN THE BUDOKAN” and others, but this work is also a beautiful sound that is beyond the common sense of the audience that cannot be measured by ordinary standards. What’s even more wonderful is the audience. There are no close conversations or enthusiasm, and only applause between songs. It is delicate like a gentle May rain, but the sense of distance is vivid from close hits to far-away ripples. This creates a spectacle that spreads endlessly throughout the venue, and combined with numerous sound effects that made full use of the sound technology of the time, it creates an indescribable “sound world”. This spectacle is unique to FLOYD and Japan. Audience recordings are known for their excellent realism, but the sound of this work is not just realism. It is a world of beauty that can be called spatial art and mood art because it is an audience recording. And silence. For example, in “A New Machine Part 1”, Gilmour’s singing voice with effects roars, but there is no noise mixed into the sound. The silence that seems to echo even the sound of clothes rustling depicts the concentration of the audience, which inevitably increases the tension of the performance. Robert Fripp once praised Bill Bruford’s “contribution without playing” and added his name to the composition credits of “Trio”. The silence of this work is the same. It is filled with a presence that comes from being in front of you and sending silent concentration to the stage. What adds to the silent emotion is the fact that this is the “last performance in Japan”. Although there is no big difference in the set and the contents of the show, each song, each sound is the last live performance in Japan. Not only Gilmour at the scene, but the audience probably didn’t think “today is the last”, but it is too heavy for us now. Because of the beautiful sound, the edge of the sound disappearing into the space is vividly recorded, and even the vibration feels dear. It’s almost 30 years since this show. It is a masterpiece of the best audience album that appeared before that milestone. Not only is it a live album where you can stand at the last PINK FLOYD in Japan and enjoy the art of sound with your whole body, but it is also an essential piece for completing your Japanese performance collection.
