Description

PINK FLOYD returned to the stage in 1987 for the first time in 6 years since “THE WALL Tour”. Introducing a live album where you can experience the early stages of “A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON Tour”, which was overwhelming with huge spectacle. What is infused into this work is “October 7, 1987 New York performance”. This is an excellent audience recording recorded at the iconic large venue “Madison Square Garden (hereinafter referred to as MSG)”. Speaking of MSG in 1987, the well-received “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1987 1ST NIGHT” is still fresh in my memory, but this work is a different performance even though it is at the same venue. This is also a good opportunity, so let’s archive 1987 with our collection. [“Utsu” released on September 7th]・September 9th-17th (6 performances)・September 19th “PHILADELPHIA 1987 SOUNDBOARD”・September 21st “ECHOES FROM TORONTO”・September 22nd-27th (5 performances)・September 28th “NEW WIND OF CHANGE (Rosemont)”・September 30th: Milwaukee performance・October 3rd “THE LOUD HOUSE 1987 (Syracuse)”・October 5th “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN” 1987 1ST NIGHT”・October 6th: MSG performance (2nd day)・October 7th: MSG performance (3rd day)←★This work★・October 10th-16th (6 performances)・October 17th “PROVIDENCE FROST 1987” October 19th – December 10th (34 performances) The “depression tour” itself will continue intermittently until 2 years later in July 1989, but here the new FLOYD will start. I’ve narrowed it down to 1987. Three consecutive nights of performances were held at MSG, and this work was the last day. In terms of the entire tour, this was the 19th concert, exactly one month after the album was released. This work, which vacuum-packs such a scene, is a truly neat and exquisite recording. It is also known that the audience video was left on this day, but this work is of course a separate recording. To be honest, I’m not the type who can expect a sound board-like close feeling, but that doesn’t mean it’s far away. The rhythm section and synths create a soft world, while the guitar and vocals that pierce through the middle are extremely clear and vivid. It is clearly a sound focused on Gilmore. It wouldn’t be surprising if it were just a matter of volume balance, but what’s interesting is that Gilmore’s focus on brightness and detail. The synths and bass fill the large venue with ambiguous and inclusive power, but Gilmore’s guitar is beautiful not only in the melody but also in the picking, and you can clearly hear the lyrics in the vocals. What’s more, it’s amazing because the sound it makes is beautiful. I mentioned “tolerance” earlier, but this doesn’t just mean a vague sound. The vibe itself that makes up the chord feel is extremely detailed, surrounding it with a three-dimensional feel that feels like it’s falling from the heavens. If I had to compare it to this, it has a majestic quality similar to that of a society’s pipe organ. Perhaps the on-site sound production was aiming for such an effect, but this work has a distinct sound with a clear division of roles between the illusion and the melody. What is depicted with such sound is a full show that is a bit different from the official live work “Hikari: PERFECT LIVE!”. Let’s compare and organize them here. Part 1 (DISC 1: 11 songs)・Flame: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)・Utsu: Signs of Life (★)/Learning to Fly/Yet Another Movie/Round and Around/A New Machine (Part 1 ) (★) / Terminal Frost (★) / A New Machine (Part 2) (★) / Sorrow / The Dogs of War / On the Turning Away Part 2 (DISC 2: 9 songs) / Meddle: One of These Days・Madness: Time/On the Run (★)/Us and Them/Money ・Flame: Wish You Were Here/Welcome to the Machine (★) ・The Wall: Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)/Comfortably Numb Encore (DISC 2: 2 songs)・Utsu: One Slip (★)・The Wall: Run Like Hell *Note: Songs marked with “★” cannot be heard on the official edition “Hikari: PERFECT LIVE!” …and it looks like this. To put it bluntly, it’s the same as “1ST NIGHT” two days ago, and you can enjoy a full show that is over 30 minutes longer than “Hikari: PERFECT LIVE!”. In this work, only “One of These Days” at the beginning of the second part was included at the end of DISC 1, but it is roughly composed of two parts: “DISC 1 = Part 1” and “DISC 2 = Part 2 + Encore” It has become. Still, it’s dynamic. Sometimes people tend to think that “the less the audience recording sounds, the better”, but this cannot be said unconditionally. In the first place, since it is an official work, the sound board sound is purposely applied with an effector, and the well-balanced sound emits the spectacle of a large venue and the feeling of symphonic rain, giving it depth and luster. Audience recording does not create the deliciousness of such a sound with effects, but rather with the natural elements of the venue’s reverberations. In reality, this would not be possible unless the sound output side created delicate sounds, but the star of this work is none other than PINK FLOYD. It is also one of the songs where you can enjoy plenty of “delicious sounds” that can only be expected from one of the best acoustic groups in the scene. “A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON Tour” attracted attention for its huge light show, but it was also a big spectacle in terms of sound. This work is proof of that kind of sound, and is also a live album that lets you enjoy the exquisite on-site sensation. Exquisite audience recording of “October 7, 1987 New York Performance”. While the rhythm section and synths filled the large venue with their soft and inclusive power, the guitar and vocals that pierced through the middle were extremely clear and vivid. Brightness and detail are focused on Gilmore, the guitar is beautiful not only the melody but also the picking, and the lyrics of the vocals can be heard properly. It is a well-defined sound with a clear division of roles between fantasy and melody. You can experience the huge spectacle of A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON Tour with dynamic sound.
