Recorder 2 shakes Recorder 1 in an unexpected incident!! The second day of Pink Floyd’s Earl’s Court on May 19, 1973 is brought to life in a special real documentary using the master cassette of recordings on the same day released by the recorder himself. !!May 19, 1973 – Earl’s Court, London, UK. The last day of this 2DAYS performance, which is known as Floyd’s only May performance in 1973, has had many titles so far. The true debut was “EARLS COURT 1973 2ND NIGHT (Sigma 191)”, which appeared from our Sigma label in July 2017. The 1st gen sound source, which was directly downloaded from the treasured cassette master known as Recorder 1 in the best digital environment, was recorded on the 19th, which was confirmed at that time. It became a hot topic as the definitive Recorder 1 sound that surpassed everything in the title. However, even in the first generation Rec 1 source, there are missing scenes due to master recording (* The turning point of the tape used and the recording on/off between songs due to the remaining amount of tape), and the sound quality is poor. It is also true that it lacked completeness in terms of perfect recording of things that were out of the ordinary. Therefore, the Sigma 191 edition adopted Recorder 2, which was recorded separately on the same day, to make up for the missing parts, and it was because of this that the famous title could be completed. However, in May of this year, the sound source of Recorder 2, which was digitized directly from the master cassette, was suddenly posted online by the recorder himself, and it attracted a lot of attention. Although it was recorded completely separately from Rec 1 using two inexpensive models from overseas manufacturers, C120 and C90, it is powerful with almost no tape hiss (*Rec 1 is somewhat noticeable in quiet scenes). We are proud of this advantage. This was newly digitized using Nakamichi’s famous deck “DR-1” which has an adjustable head azimuth angle, and the sound has a stable sound image that is better than Rec 1 in all scenes, and moreover, it uses a 120-minute tape on one side. Because of this, he attempted to record without worrying about the remaining tape capacity, so it has a high documentary quality as it records the sound of the day for about 4 minutes (!!!) longer than Rec 1. . Furthermore, based on the recorder’s own comments, it has now been revealed for the first time that the recording location of this Recorder 2 is “Block AA, K28” in the arena. On the other hand, it is known that the recording location of Recorder 1, which was also announced at the time by the recorder himself, is “Block BB, E14” of the arena. Being able to visually grasp the relative positional relationship between both recorders and the stage in this way is very effective in imagining each recorded sound, and it is also interesting to be able to see the traces of this as a documentary of the day. To give you one easy-to-understand example, after the end of “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” (* around 14:07~), you can hear the distinctive voices of some people shouting something loudly in the distance. A finger whistle can be heard, but if you check this in the same scene of Rec 1, you can hear the characteristic loud voice and finger whistle from a relatively close position. If you listen to the performance sound again after keeping in mind the positional relationship between the two sides, you will be able to experience a more three-dimensional and vivid feeling of the scene and live recording of the day. If you do so, you will be able to grasp the performance even more deeply. Even so, what surprises me again is the charm of this Rec 2 original sound that comes out as it is from the master tape. After all, not only can you seamlessly listen to the missing scenes of Rec 1 with a stable sound image, but with the basic advantage of no tape hiss, there are scenes with good sound quality that are on par with Rec 1… and sometimes even surpass it. That’s what I’m doing. A glimpse of this can already be heard from the intro of Disc 1-(1) and “Obscured By Clouds”, and the power of the thick and transparent midrange makes us realize that what was lacking in Rec 1 was the weight of the sound. is noticed. In “When You’re In,” the direct feel of the organ that becomes noticeable from around 4:00 is more natural and pleasant to the ear than Rec 1, and this also shows what was lacking in Rec 1, which had a strong high range. Probably. “Careful With That Ax, Eugene” is a recording of Roger whispering for about a minute before the screaming (* 4:22-5:27) and after the screaming explosion subsides (* 9:24-). It is captured with clarity and ease of listening comparable to 1, and you can also feel that the accuracy of the scene has been improved. What’s more, it comes with the nice bonus that the tuning scene that occurs after the end of the song is recorded completely uncut for about 2 minutes. In Rec 1, this scene was only partially left depending on whether the recording button was turned on or off, but here it is completely recorded. You can hear it in person. Also, what you will notice about “Echoes” is the lack of tape hiss in Rec 2 (*…or rather, it is almost non-existent). At this point, Rec 1 is clear but the intensity of hiss starts to become noticeable, but Rec 2’s noiseless and stable sound image becomes even more prominent. Furthermore, the flow of Rec 1 so far = the total recording time of the first half of the show is 67 minutes and 57 seconds. On the other hand, this Rec 2 is recorded for nearly 4 minutes at 71 minutes 01 seconds, and you will be reminded of the significance of uncut recording from the first half of the show. With the complete reproduction of the dark side of Disc 2, the presence of Rec 2 will increase even more. In fact, when comparing both sources, the texture of Gilmour’s youthful singing voice in “Breathe” and the power of the intersection of SE sounds in “On the Run” are on par with Recorder 1, and even more powerful with no hiss noise at all. It is obvious to anyone that Rec 1 has already surpassed Rec 1 in terms of basic sound quality and ease of listening because of its advantages (* However, on the other hand, Rec 1 has better clarity and wider range. 1 is better). “The Great Gig In The Sky” is sure to impress even more than Rec 1 with the two female vocals moving in a wide range, and when it comes to “Us And Them”, this recording is already a supplementary source for Rec 1. You will be reminded that it is a valuable separate recording that captures the multifaceted nature of the performance on the same day from a different perspective, not the position. From 5:34 onward of “Any Color You Like” to the end of the disc, Rec 1 is supplemented in reverse, but this is the moment when a paradigm shift, a change in value, occurs when you experience the actual sounds of both sources. Also included. This is because this is the decisive moment when you realize that Rec 1 and Rec 2 are almost evenly matched. Mr. Phil (*Phil), the person who recorded this Recorder 2, said the following in a comment at the time of upload. “…My recordings won’t replace Recorder 1, but they complement it nicely.” However, if you listen to this, everyone will realize that it is not a mediocre recording that is hidden in the shadow of Recorder 1. It doesn’t replace it, it doesn’t complement it. By listening to both recordings, you will realize that you can experience the highly accurate final day of Earl’s Court in 1973 for the first time. A different sound source from the previous one. All episodes are recorded stably. The missing parts of Echoes, Speak To Me, and Any Color You Like have been patched on Recorder 1 recorded by Steve B.
