Description

Pink Floyd’s famous performance in Rome in 1971 has been polished with new sources, and is now available as a 3-disc set (!!) that includes the first appearance in history!!! The sound source has been known for a long time, and the CD It was a representative example of a sound source whose price would continue to soar when it was released as a disc but remained out of print and appeared on the used disc market. That is this performance in Rome, Italy on June 20, 1971. As you may know, the sound source for this day was known as the 2-disc analog LP “ROME 20-6-1971″ that appeared in the early 1980s, and some people may have that sound and performance deeply imprinted in their memories. I think there are many. CDs include “LIVE IN ROME”, which appeared in a tall double-door box case in 1994, and in March 2006, the original recording source and original LP drop disc “ROME 1971” appeared. It gained popularity and was eventually discontinued. However, as the demand for reprinting could not be resisted, “THE RETURN OF THE SONS OF NOTHING” was released in November 2015, and although it was reprinted once in 2018 with a price revision, it has not been widely available since then. The era has entered the 21st century without being made into a recording. This is the reason why it finally appears this time, but above all it is because this recording had difficulties in terms of sound. Just to be sure, I wrote down the characteristics of these previously released titles again, and I think they had the following characteristics. “ROME 20-6-1971″ (2-disc LP)Although it is a little rough, it features a sharp sound with clarity in the high range. The only problem is that the left channel is a little closed. It’s not that no sound is being produced, but this gives the impression that the sound is congested, making the range feel narrow, cramped, and flat. Due to the recording time of the LP version, a total of 4 songs from the middle of the show are not included. “ROME 1971” (2 CD set and others) 2LP “ROME 20-6-1971” and the original recording are the same, but the same sound source is branched out from there. Although there is a rumor that it is the 4th Gen, it has a wider range than “ROME 20-6-1971” and the phase is fixed in the center so there is no blurring, and “ROME 20-6-1971” is recorded on an LP version. It is characterized by the inclusion of many songs and scenes that were cut due to time constraints. Generally, the sound is clear and round, but there is a lot of hiss, and sometimes the sound suddenly becomes sharp, then returns to a rounded sound, causing some deterioration in some areas. There are quite a few places where there are. In addition, the beginning of “Fat old Sun” and other parts are recorded with a deeper and degraded sound than “ROME 20-6-1971”, and the pre-performance announcement scene introducing the band was completely cut out. It also has aspects that cannot be said to surpass everything in “ROME 20-6-1971″. However, it is not true that there has been no movement regarding this sound source for the past few years. In 2015, a low-gen source appeared that, although the source itself was the same, greatly surpassed the sound quality of these previously released records, and suddenly attracted attention. The source used for this work is the one that has been further refined, and the brilliance that was achieved after a long period of time and effort completely changed the impression of Rome in 1971, and it is something that we have never seen before. We have achieved a sound image that is better as a raw source than any sound we have ever heard. Please note that this work is a 3-disc set as a result of that effort. All the previous LPs and previously released titles were contained in 2 discs, but why is it a 3-disc set this time? This is because none of the existing sound sources in the past had been properly pitch corrected. In fact, all of these original sound sources have the troublesome aspect that the pitch gradually and irregularly increases from the middle of the show onwards, “The Embryo”. I carefully corrected it so that it would resonate. As a result, the entire sound returned to its original form = the total time increased, but this 2015 source also includes another scene that appears for the first time in history (!!!), so this amount is also added. As a result, it turned out that if all the scenes were recorded at the correct pitch and length, it would never fit on two discs. Therefore, this is the first 3-disc set of the 1971 Rome in the history of sound sources, and how much difference is there in content from the previously released version, which was a 2-disc set without any such problems? I think you can guess it from here. The power and sound quality of the 2015 source, which has regained its original appearance and potential, is truly shocking. The Italian venue announcement announcing the start of the performance, which was cut from the previous release, is also included, and the tough and vivid tone of “Atom Heart Mother” that suddenly rises up evokes the familiar image of that day’s performance. I’m sure it will be repainted from the beginning. The extended and intertwining guitar melody has a higher resolution than any of the previous releases, and the guide vocal section that follows has a three-dimensional depth and clarity that was lacking on the previous releases ( *You’ll be quite surprised by the difference!!). In addition, the lack of hiss is a decisive difference from the previously released version, but above all, it is an overwhelmingly superior source with a wide midrange and a stable position, so the dynamic acoustic changes between quiet parts and loud parts are extremely It shows up well. Of course, the round check that lasts about 3 minutes after the performance is completely recorded without cuts with a highly transparent sound image (* The same scene of “ROME 20-6-1971” is cut, and the previously released version has a hissing sound from beginning to end. noticeable). “Careful With That Ax, Eugene” is notable for its phase accuracy. If you listen and compare, it will be obvious that the sound image of both previously released versions is closer to the left side, and the right channel is slightly off. However, with this new source, the sound is centered, the right channel output is normal, and the glossy and clear sound brings out that mysterious horror, giving you a goosebumps sound experience. Furthermore, here is also a complete uncut recording of the approximately two and a half minute sound check that comes after the end of the song, and of course this will also appear with the best sound ever. In “Fat Old Sun”, you can see the difference from the previously released version in the middle guitar solo. Here, you can see that the sound image of the previously released disc was quite deep and cloudy, and in “ROME 20-6-1971”, you will notice that the sound vibration was worsening the hearing. By the way, this source has a temporary sound loss at 9:19, and to compensate for this, it is rewound to around 9:06 and the subsequent development is recorded. This part is skillfully connected from 9:15 to 16 in “ROME 20-6-1971”, and in the source used on the Windmill-011 board, the connection can be confirmed at 9:38 when the organ solo starts, so from the original source The cut may have occurred due to the difference in the remaining amount of tape used when copying. Although there is no sound missing due to this in this source, the overlapping section (= about 15 seconds) when rewinding and restarting copying is deliberately not edited, leaving the new source as it is. The announcement at the beginning of Disc 2 is of course before the start of the second part of the show, but in the already released version this was recorded as part of the last track of Disc 1 (= show part 1). This time, the disc was divided and recorded in the correct position. What I would like to pay attention to in “The Return Of The Son Of Nothing” is the sound image in the middle that starts at 6:04. The tonal luster, power, and clarity of the guitar and organ that drive the song jump out with an unprecedented sound power, and the good reverberation that was difficult to grasp on the previous release is also attractive, so there is a gap between the sounds. The changes in the sound of the song can be perceived more and more clearly. In “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”, a completely different sound can be heard from the right channel in the introduction, as well as the source used on the already released version. This is a trace when this source was overwritten on some recording originally recorded on the tape used (*probably a music radio program at the time), but since this symptom only appears on this song, this one song is the only one. Another source may have been used that followed a different route. But this is also a very high-quality sound image, so I smile bitterly. “Cymbaline” is characterized by Fushi’s quirky singing style, just like the Brescia performance on the 19th the previous day, and the unique charm of that early take appears here with a wonderful sound. The hiss noise is a little noticeable in the footsteps skit scene, but you can see that this has actually been significantly reduced compared to each previous release. “A Saucerful Of Secrets” suddenly clears up, as if erasing the already released version where the sound was blurred, and a more direct and clear sound comes out. When you actually listen to the sound, you will notice that the outline of the sound is as sharp as +2, and the performance is centered firmly in the center, so it is an order of magnitude more comfortable to listen to. There is a momentary sound cutout at 18:15, but this is the same on the previously released version, and it is probably a sign of deterioration caused by the original master tape or a recording error that occurred when transferred to the 1st gen. However, everything including such shortcomings can be experienced with a vivid sound image that exceeds the previous release. On Disc 3, you can see the first appearance scene from the beginning. This is a scene waiting for an encore, but it gets a high point because it includes a light tuning scene that also serves as a sound output. Although it only lasts for 1 minute and 10 seconds, it is a very important scene that greatly improves the documentary quality of the scene on that day. And “Astronomy Domine”, where the audience’s expectations rise to the MAX, shines everywhere with the high descriptive performance unique to this source, and the wonderful performance sound is driven from deep within the soul. It’s sure to be heart-warming. Also, this song was not included in “ROME 20-6-1971” in the first place, and the previously released version cuts out the encore waiting scene and starts the song suddenly, so the listening experience as a show is quite different. Let’s also note that there are. After the performance, there will be an announcement in the venue in Italian (announcement of the end of the performance) that can be heard on the previously released version, but the future schedule of the same venue that can be heard here is not only tougher and clearer than the previously released version. It is also worth noting that the disc ends are broken. This disc end part was faded out on the Windmill-011 version, but in this work, the source is recorded without being processed = with the recording fragments intact, so the rawness is conveyed until the very end. It is. The Brescia performance on the 19th, the day before Rome, will be released as an amazing new sound source using Recorder 2 for the first time, but both of these will reflect the image of 2DAYS in Italy in 1971 that we had until now. This is the latest work with so much sound potential that it will fundamentally change the world. Brescia, which you can listen to for the first time in history, will give you unknown knowledge with ultra-high sound quality, and this Rome performance will bring you the joy of being able to drastically rewrite the image you should have known well in the correct form.
