Description
This incredibly rare live performance, recorded in astonishingly high quality from a miraculously unearthed broadcast recording of a 1971 performance at the Nice Jazz Festival in France, is a must-have for jazz enthusiasts. He released his first album as a leader on the ESP label in 1964 and joined the John Coltrane Group in 1965. He accompanied Coltrane on his tour of Japan, and after Coltrane’s death in 1967, he focused on band leadership. This live performance took place amid the European attention that followed the release of the renowned album “Tembi” on Impulse in 1971. The band’s lineup included Lonnie Liston Smith, Cecil McBee, Jimmy Hopps, and Lawrence Killian, and their live performance conveys a more direct and compelling sound than the music on the album.
