Description
The 2CD “DEFINITIVE MONTREAL 1974” was the best live performance of Peter Gabriel’s era. The origin of this masterpiece was the radio “CHOM-FM” broadcast in 1974. However, this program not only broadcast GENESIS’s live performance, but also aired an interview with Gabriel and Peter Hamill’s live performance before the main part of the live show. This work is a radio album that includes the first part of the main story. Although it is the opening part, it is a long one, reaching 73 minutes. The first part is Gabriel’s interview part. The interview with the phone is divided into two parts and lasts about 25 minutes, but what you hear is rather the 1972 BBC session “Twilight Alehouse” and “Return Of The Giant Hogweed” that is sandwiched between. It seems that they chose songs that were not played in the main live performance among the many BBC sessions, but this is also a terrible sound of official quality. In particular, the studio live performance of “Twilight Alehouse”, which was the B-side song of the single “I KNOW WHAT I LIKE (IN YOUR WARDROBE)”, is extremely valuable. After being introduced to Gabriel, Hamill’s performance, which is “the other Peter,” begins. This is the biggest charm of this work. At that time, Hamill had just completed his 4th solo album “IN CAMERA” (released 3 months later), and it had been two years since VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR disbanded. This live show was about 30 minutes long and included 6 songs, and was performed in the style of singing with one acoustic guitar. Although it cannot be said to be as good as the main press 2CD, you can listen to the valuable solo performance on the broadcast sound source. Since he sings with a single acoustic guitar, the theatrical vocals that are comparable to Gabriel’s are vivid, and it is an FM recording where Hamill whispers and barks “in your ear”. Peter Gabriel and Peter Hamill were famous as British theatrical vocalists. The voices of both men were heard on the same program in 1974. This is a record of this vivid sense of the times with the best sound. I highly recommend that not only progressive rock fans who like VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, but also fans of GENESIS and Gabriel himself, give “Another Masterpiece” a listen. It is an exquisite live performance filled with such wonderful singing voices. Not only can you listen to the complete version of the program along with the main story, but it is also a radio album that emits the atmosphere of 1974, when “Two Peters” were venting their energy, shining in the history of progressive rock. Please take this opportunity to try it. University Sports Arena, Montreal, Canada 21st April 1974 CHOM FM Broadcast (73:05) Peter Gabriel 1. Peter Gabriel on air interview pt 1 2.
