Description
This is the first time that the legendary drummer Peter Erskine has released his second album from the ECM label in 1993, “Time Being,” following his 1992 release “You Never Know.” This is the first time that this amazing live performance from Udine, Italy in 1993 was recorded on a high-quality soundboard for over an hour! This live recording captures Erskine at the peak of his career, when he had accumulated all kinds of experiences and formed his first full-fledged piano trio to great acclaim. It perfectly packages the wonderful triangle of Erskine and his ideal lineup: Parre Danielsson, the renowned Swedish bassist who performed with Bill Evans when he was still in his teens and is known for his work with the Keith Jarrett European Quartet, and John Taylor, one of the best pianists in the UK and Europe. Taylor has been a driving force behind British jazz since the 1960s, working with Alan Skidmore, Graham Collier, and John Surman, and in 1971 released his first album as a leader with a trio, “Decipher,” attracting attention for its fast-paced, sophisticated interplay based on modal techniques. In 1976 he formed the band “Azimuth” with Kenny Wheeler and others, and gained popularity for its lyrical, pastoral sound. Taylor continues to release high-quality works on ECM to this day. Starting with a drum solo of over 5 minutes, including Erskine’s virtuoso cymbal work, the album goes from a beautiful and fantastical number with a clear lyricism that makes use of the space characteristic of ECM, to an aggressive and speedy number that is full of tension that can only be found in a live performance, and includes plenty of solos that combine the intelligence, outstanding technique and sense of Erskine, Taylor and Danielson, as well as a perfect trio ensemble, with an exquisite balance of movement and stillness! This is a must-listen and must-have for piano trio fans and ECM fans alike!
