Description

The Beatles are said to have broken up in 1970. The material recorded in the Get Back sessions in 1969 was shelved for a long time, and finally saw the light of day in 1970 as the album “Let It Be” produced by Phil Spector. This was the first Beatles album produced by anyone other than George Martin. However, around the same time, Paul announced the release of his first solo album. Usually, it is customary not to release an album at a later date, taking sales into consideration, but this time, despite persuasion from Ringo and others, Paul went ahead with the release. It seems that he no longer had any attachment to the Beatles. Moreover, this album includes a Q&A, and Paul’s answers strongly suggested that the Beatles were breaking up, so it is said that Paul had actually declared the breakup. Although the Beatles broke up in 1970, due to contractual reasons, the official breakup was in 1974. Until then, the members had a mountain of contractual issues to clear. As if to rebel against this, Paul went solo and credited his first single to “PAUL AND LINDA McCARTNEY.” This meant that Linda would also receive some of the songwriting royalties. The record company questioned Linda’s songwriting ability and complained to Paul, which led to a deterioration in their relationship. There were many other troubles and problems associated with the breakup during this period, and the relationship between the record company and Paul continued to deteriorate. In order to repair the relationship, the record company proposed a TV special program for Paul’s new band, Wings. The program known as “JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY” was born as a result of a kind of appeasement strategy for Paul. “JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY” is a valuable video record of the early days of Wings. It was first broadcast in the United States on April 16, 1973, and then a little later in the UK on May 10. The director is Dwight Hemione, who has worked on many music programs. The character of this program is reflected in the fact that it was not a film director but someone from the TV industry. This was the first Beatles-related TV special since Magical Mystery Tour. I’m sure you already know the details of the program, so there’s no need to write about it again here. It’s full of precious early Wings footage, very impressive, and a must-see for fans. On the contrary, the sight of Wings in motion in 1973 is even moving. Moreover, it is the only remaining footage of them performing “Big Barn Bed,” and in the scene where Paul plays acoustic guitar next to Linda while she is filming, “Heart Of The Country,” which is also the only performance scene and live take, is recorded. In addition, they even play Beatles songs such as “Michelle” and “Yesterday,” which probably made fans at the time go wild. The charm of Wings’ early days is recorded in full. And the feature of this work is that the image quality has been greatly improved. Compared to the conventional screen, the dark and rough image has become bright and clear. Of course, it is a video from the early 70s and cannot be compared to modern images, but it can be said that it is the highest quality image currently available. Furthermore, such programs and movies usually record the audio separately from the actual real-time audio and then overlay it later. For example, in the scene of “Jonny B Goode” in the movie “Back to the Future”, it is not actually Michael J. Fox who is singing. This CD contains such rehearsal and outtake audio for James Paul McCartney. It is unclear whether there is a video that can be synchronized, but it is surprising that such outtakes exist, even if they are only audio. The main scene is Linda filming Paul playing the acoustic guitar, but what is great is that it includes many songs that were not used in the main story. “Take Your Time” is a short but unreleased song that Linda sings first and Paul sings the same song. “Mama’s Little Girl” and “Country Dreamer” are also unused songs in the main story. There is no record of “Country Dreamer” being performed live, and this is probably the only one, even if it is only with an acoustic guitar. What’s even more surprising is that they play “Love Is Long”. You may not recognize the title, but it is the second half of “Long Haired Lady” from the album “RAM”. In other words, this song was made by joining two songs together, and the second half of that is titled “Love Is Long” and is played here alone. It’s simple, but very beautiful with Paul’s vocals and Linda’s chorus, and it’s a wonderful song that makes you want to listen to it forever. What’s even more unusual is that they play “Hands Of Love” with only an acoustic guitar. Although it’s a short performance just for fun, it’s very interesting that they play one of the songs in the final medley of “RED ROSE SPEEDWAY” in this way. Next, there is a recording of them rehearsing the intro to the “Gotta Sing Gotta Dance” scene many times. This is the introduction to the scene where dancers in different costumes dance on the left and right. It starts with Paul whistling and then he starts singing quietly on the piano. It’s amazing how much rehearsal went into just that scene. The same goes for the rehearsal of the following “Live And Let Die”. Here, the rehearsal of the narration that is overlaid on the scene where Paul and Linda are eating popcorn at the movie theater is recorded. This will be the definitive version of the TV special “JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY”, which has been released many times so far. The image quality is better than the previous version, and the sound source includes outtakes of the sound that are synchronized with the shooting. AUDIO DISC Setting and Camera Checks 01.
