Description

The 2017 version of “ONE ON ONE” started with the Japan tour. The second installment is here, telling us about the “post-Japan” tour. This time, it is a highly anticipated work with Bruce Springsteen, which has been reported in various music news. This work contains “September 15th + 17th, 2017: New York performance”. This is a six-disc set that contains two performances at the traditional large venue “Madison Square Garden (hereinafter MSG)” on three discs each. The other day, we delivered “NEWARK 2017 1ST NIGHT” as the first North American report, but for those who missed it, let’s start with a full view of the 2017 tour.・April 25-30: Japan (4 shows) ・July 7-26: North America #1 (10 shows) ・September 11-October 2: North America #2 (11 shows) ←★Here★ ・October 13-28: South America + Mexico (6 shows) ・December 2-16: Oceania (7 shows) This is the 2017 schedule that has been announced so far. The MSG performance in this work is the 3rd and 4th performances of “North America #2”. Now, let’s take a closer look at the two shows. [Disc 1-3: September 15th (first day)] The main event is the first day of MSG, “September 15th”. This is also the much talked about collaboration with the boss. And above all, the sound is amazing! The first North American report “NEWARK 2017 1ST NIGHT” was also wonderful, but this work is even more beautiful. Especially on this first day, the famous machine “Schoeps MK41” was used, and the best seat was the 8th row in the center of the floor. The detailed chorus spread out with a sense of scale, but the band’s performance was direct and thrust in front of me. There was very little venue sound that overlapped with Paul’s singing voice, and the details were extremely clear. The singing voice of the venue that seemed to wrap around from behind and Paul’s singing voice in front of me. The contrast was so vivid that it even created a three-dimensional effect of the space. In fact, the directness and clarity of the band was so good that it made me want to call it “like a sound board,” and it is one of the best recordings of “ONE ON ONE” as a whole. Such beautiful sound depicts a monumental show that Paul himself said was “a night of memories.” The other day’s “NEWARK 2017 1ST NIGHT” was reminiscent of the Tokyo Dome performance, but this work is much bolder. They will perform “A Day In The Life”, “All My Loving”, and “Helter Skelter”, numbers that could not be heard at the Japanese performance. “A Day In The Life” and “Helter Skelter” were performed at last year’s “DESERT TRIP 2016”, but “All My Loving” is the first in two years. It has hardly been performed since the Nippon Budokan in 2015, and that legendary night suddenly comes back to mind. And, of course, Bruce Springsteen. He appears with his partner Steve Van Zandt for the encore, but as soon as Paul calls his name, a tremendous ovation breaks out. Then, they co-star in “I Saw Her Standing There”, but in fact they play the same song twice. This is not a redo of a mistake. Paul said, “The sound was so great that I had to do it twice, Rockin’ out with the boss!” In fact, both Paul and the boss were happy and excited, and the audience joined in the chorus. This is definitely the best highlight of this 6-disc set. [Discs 4-6: September 17th (2nd day)] Next is the second day after a day off. There are two performances at MSG, so this work is completely complete. The sound here is also great. As expected, it is not one step away from the tour’s best discs 1-3, but the sound of the famous machine “SP-CMC-8”, which is a favorite of masters in modern times, is simply delicious. The powerful and thick musical sound is comparable to discs 1-3, while the sense of perspective of carrying a big ovation from behind is very similar. If there is a difference, it is the “sound”. In contrast to discs 1-3, which were crystal clear, this work is colored by the faint sound of the venue. If discs 1-3 are “like a sound board”, this one feels like a “slightly outdated broadcast sound source”. Of course, both performances are real audiences, but the musical sound / performance is so robust and vivid that it makes you want to say so. The sound portrays an even more delicious set. They also play “A Day In The Life” and “Helter Skelter”, which were heard on the first day, but they also add a lot of repertoire that was not available in Japan, such as “Day Tripper” and “Got To Get You Into My Life”. All of these songs were played at “DESERT TRIP 2016” and became the highlights. It’s as if that legendary festival has returned to MSG. “MSG Day 1”, where you can enjoy a collaboration with Bruce Springsteen with one of the clearest sounds on the tour, and “MSG Day 2”, which can be said to be a luxurious bonus disc. This is a luxurious 6-disc set that allows you to enjoy the huge highlight performance from corner to corner with the apex recording. If you are thinking of “one overseas performance”, this is a masterpiece that I would recommend without hesitation. Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.
