A masterpiece movie “GET BACK” depicting the 1989/1990 tour. The Japan special version has been decided to be released. This movie needs no introduction. It was released in theaters in 1991 and soon became a software version. This is a well-known masterpiece that was released on DVD in 2002 and Blu-ray in 2012. At our store, we have also introduced the Japanese laser disc version that was released at the time. However, this work is different from both of them. It is a collection of two special versions produced by a certain broadcasting association. [Main: Japanese Broadcasting Version with subtitles] The first thing that will appear is the Japanese Broadcasting Version. However, it is not the one from the 1990s, but the one that has been rebroadcast in recent years. Therefore, you can enjoy the super beautiful image quality of the official DVD, but that is not the point. In fact, the broadcast station’s own Japanese subtitles are included. This is extremely thorough. The official DVD also had subtitles for the MC, but this broadcast also included the lyrics. And it’s not just one or two songs, but the whole song. Not only famous songs by the Beatles and Wings, but also “Rough Ride” and “This One” from “FLOWERS IN THE DIRT,” and even “Birthday” in the end credits. Every word that comes out of Paul’s mouth comes through in Japanese (though it doesn’t fit into “One, two, three, four” or “Yeah!”, etc.). In the 1970s and 1980s, there were broadcasts that included subtitles only for hit songs, but it was rare to find them this thorough. What’s more, the wording has the quality of a certain broadcasting company, but it also has a naturalness to it that comes from the recent years when rock music has become so pervasive. Although it’s a movie that we’re already familiar with (the pitch is a semitone (4%) slower than the current DVD/Blu-ray), it feels very fresh. [Bonus: Another phantom version LD] Another version unique to Japan produced by a certain broadcasting company. This is the laser disc “INTRODUCTION OF GET BACK” that was released at that time. There’s also a caption that says, “This work is an edited version of the movie GET BACK,” and that’s exactly right. Four songs are extracted from the movie: “Rough Ride,” “Get Back,” “Band On The Run,” and “Let It Be.” Therefore, the only thing that is new in terms of content is the unique title screen, but its existence itself is interesting. The laser disc band says, “Paul McCartney’s live and documentary film “GET BACK,” which was released worldwide in November 1991, is a special edition that captures the excitement and emotion!!” Therefore, the main movie version. It is hard to believe that it was a trial version beforehand, and the intention behind its production itself is a mystery. It may have been a low-priced version aimed at a wider audience (the regular price of this one was 3,800 yen, compared to 6,800 yen for the laser disc of the main movie). In any case, the very fact that these works were released makes me feel the social situation of 1990/1991, when Paul’s first solo visit to Japan was booming.
