In the UK, it was number one for seven consecutive weeks from the end of July 1974, more than half a year after its release, and was a long-running hit that ranked in the top 10 for a total of 46 weeks. In the US, it was number one for four weeks intermittently in Billboard magazine, was ranked in the top 10 for 32 weeks, and was third in the 1974 annual ranking, and in CASHBOX magazine it was number one for four weeks intermittently, and was second in the 1974 annual ranking.
