Description

Paul McCartney has entered 2018 with warm-up gigs in Liverpool and London in June and July. Then, on September 7, 2018, a special live performance was held at a special stage in New York’s Grand Central Station. Although the set list is simpler than usual, there is no sense of Paul’s decline as a musician, and although the band has already entered its 16th year since becoming a member, everyone is performing wonderfully. Finally, they announced that they will be going on a new tour titled FRESHEN UP TOUR, replacing the previous ONE ON ONE TOUR. The tour will kick off in Canada in September 2018, include festival appearances, and has an American schedule scheduled for 2019. Then, in 2018, a performance was held in Japan as part of this FRESHEN UP TOUR. Even he himself would not have expected that at the age of 76, more than half a century after he first came to Japan at the age of 24, he would still be performing large-scale stadium concerts in faraway Japan. The schedule is as follows. October 31, 2018 Tokyo Dome November 1, 2018 Tokyo Dome November 5, 2018 Ryogoku Kokugikan November 8, 2018 Nagoya Dome This is the first Ryogoku Kokugikan, and the 1980 Wings was scheduled. It is unique in that it includes the Nagoya performance, which was originally canceled. Although the number of Tokyo Dome performances has been reduced from three last time to two, it would be impossible for an artist other than a big name like Paul to have the mobilization power to fill the dome stadium over and over again. This work is a complete recording of the first day of the 2018 Tokyo Dome performance, including the sound check. A distinctive feature of the FRESHEN UP TOUR is that they have added new songs from their new album “EGYPT STATION” to their repertoire. Moreover, he played two songs, “Who Cares” and “Come On To Me” at the beginning of the concert, and “Fuh You” in the middle. All of these songs seem to have been designed with concert performance in mind, and serve as an important accent to the stage composition. Also, “From Me To You” will be premiered on this tour. It is one of the Beatles’ representative songs from the very early days, and is featured as one of their acoustic corner songs. Other than that, if you just look at the songs on the set list, contrary to the tour title, there are no fresh selections, and there are songs that have been played before. However, if we were to highlight the characteristics of this tour, we should focus on the arrangements rather than the songs. The major difference from traditional Paul stages is the addition of a brass section. Until now, with the exception of Wings in the 70’s, basically no one other than band members joined Paul’s stage. Of course, there were times when bagpipe bands took the stage and guests performed. However, there were no musicians who accompanied the tour and participated in the concert production every night. For the first time, a brass section joined the band. The arrangement intentionally takes advantage of the fact that the sounds that had previously been substituted by Wicks’s keyboard are now played using real instruments. The brass section makes its first appearance on “Letting Go.” What’s more, the audience is excited by the surprise performance that is suddenly performed by the members who are lined up in the audience seats instead of on the stage. In the second half of the song, a short brass solo is inserted into the break, making the arrangement even more outstanding. It is also featured extensively in the new song “Come On To Me”. The brass section also plays an important role in “Let ‘Em In,” “Lady Madonna,” “Ob La Di Ob La Da,” “Live And Let Die,” “Hey Jude,” and the final Abbey Road medley. . Additionally, the Japanese word “ichiban” is used in the song “Back In Blazil” from the album “Egypt Station”. It was previously rumored that this song would be premiered in Japan, but in the end it was added as an intro at the beginning of “Come On To Me”. Although it is a small detail, this is also an arrangement that was first introduced in Japan. [Nagoya Dome performance on November 8, 2018] This is the last day of the 2018 performance in Japan. It is a wonderful concert that has the characteristics of FRESHEN UP TOUR, but has an unprecedented grand finale. Many people may consider this day to be the best performance of the 4 performances in Japan in 2018. Paul tends to use all his energy for the last performance at the time, so the Liverpool performance is often scheduled on the last day of the tour. Since there will be no concerts for a while after this Nagoya performance, it was a very passionate performance. Paul himself approached the event with the awareness that this day was his last, and this can be seen throughout the MC talking about the wonders of his stay in Japan. For Paul, who has been visiting Japan almost every year for the past few years, the FAITHFUL Japanese fans are probably deeply engraved in his mind. It was Paul’s first performance in Nagoya, as if in response to the wishes of such Japanese fans. It is the same to open with “A Hard Day’s Night”, but the second song “Hi Hi Hi” was replaced with “Junior’s Farm” on this day as well. Furthermore, “All My Loving” has been changed to “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Yesterday” has been changed to “Birthday”, which is the only song in the Japanese performance. And on this day, “Got To Get You Into My Life” is being played for the second time on the FRESHEN UP TOUR. With the addition of the horn section, the version is quite profound and enjoyable to listen to, so I think it will be played regularly as the tour progresses. Disc 3 is the sound source of the sound check that was held before the actual performance on the day. A public sound check for VIP tickets that will perform rare songs and cover songs that will not be performed in the main event. The sound check on this day was also the best of the three days that VIP tickets were available. “Save Us”, which I haven’t heard in a long time, is of course worth listening to, but the biggest hit is probably “Jet”. Although it is a song that gets excited at every concert, and is one of Paul’s signature songs that opened the 2004 tour, it was not played on this tour, and it has never been played in Japan. However, on this day, for the first time, the sound check was performed for the first time. The song itself is not unusual as it has been played countless times, but on this day it was notable in that a horn section was included in the performance. Horns are added in a big way from the intro Jah Jah Jah Jah, making it a profound performance similar to a Wings rock show. With this high level of perfection, I think it will be added to the regular set list in the future. “Got To Get You Into My Life” on the second day in Tokyo, this “Jet” tour, I’m glad that in the process of evolving the tour, an important change was made in Japan. And based on the reaction of the Japanese fans, they will decide whether to include it in the subsequent set, which is probably because they trust the Japanese fans. From the 2018 performance in Japan, the final performance at Nagoya Dome on November 8th is completely recorded in ultra-high sound quality. It would be great if you could follow Paul’s live performances since 2003 in real time and have the latest tours from time to time available on a high quality label as soon as possible. I think that many titles will be released this time as well, but there is no need to compare them with others, as long as this work is the definitive one, it will be enough. ■Complete recording of the Nagoya Dome performance on November 8, 2018 ■Super high-quality sound with a sense of realism ■Complete recording from the sound check before the program ■Performing “Got To Get You Into My Life” with a horn section ■Sound check Then, they played “Jet” with a horn section, just like a rock show NAGOYA DOME AICHI JAPAN November 8, 2018 DISC ONE 01.
