Patrice Rushen’s music has evolved over the years, from jazz piano to fusion, jazz funk, and even black rock. Her career peaked with the hit “Forget Me Nots,” but artists like Janney and Kirk Franklin sampled “Haven’t You Heard,” and SWV sampled “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Music Soulchild feat. Aries and Trina & Tamara covered “Settle For My Love,” Jazzanova remade “Let Your Heart Be Free,” and Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover” is said to have been written about Patrice. Her sound continues to be beloved by many musicians today. This DVD features two live audience recordings from 2014, both featuring her signature songs. The band members include Rayford Griffin, who has a long history with Patrice, on drums; Patches Stewart, a Marcus Miller favorite, on trumpet; Rustin Calhoun, who wrote the new song “Song For A Better Day,” on sax; Andrew Ford, who has performed with Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan, on bass; Enzo Iannello, a former student of Patrice’s music teacher, whose guitar chops are spot-on; and Alexis Angulo, who supports Patrice on keyboards and backing vocals. Both are highly talented musicians. First, we have the live performance at Alexandria. Patrice is on the right side of the stage, and the camera is farther away on the left. However, the horns and sub-keyboards are clearly visible, which is a delight in itself. Even if the entire scene isn’t captured, the editing is solid and there’s no sense of disjointedness. This is a powerful, immersive audience recording shot by an insider. And then there’s the live performance at New Morning in Paris. This is a wonderful audience shot with Patrice at the center. This is a complete recording of the live performance with almost no editing.
