From the 1979 North American tour, when PMG released their first album and were recording their second album, “American Garage”, two live performances were recorded on soundboards from recently excavated broadcast masters, and the latest digital remastering was also done in 2024. Disc 1 is a 72-minute recording of the stage at the Jazz Festival held at a university in Florida on March 30th, and disc 2 is a 73-minute recording of a gig in Hartford, Connecticut on July 12th. Both recordings are of the best quality currently available, with the unstable parts of the sound adjusted as much as possible and crack noise and hiss noise reduced. As is well known, the performance is the simplest in Metheny’s career, with the strongest quartet formation including Lyle Mays, and the recording members of the still popular first album and “American Garage”, and of course the set is mostly from these two albums, which is a must-have for fans. The bright and generous works from his early period in his repertoire are Metheny’s own unique sound, which sets him apart from the fusion music of the time. The beautiful songs feature a series of flowing phrases that make full use of his superb technique. The refreshing live performances from this period are essential and can be said to be the origin of the unique Metheny sound that was perfected in the 1980s. Surprisingly, there are not many recordings of this year’s live performances in circulation, making this soundboard recording an extremely valuable and rare item with high documentary value.
