Description
The show at Berkeley University in California on August 2, 1985, the year after the US tour accompanying the release of “First Circle,” the final album from ECM in 1984, was recorded in full for 2 hours and 32 minutes from the high-quality audience master released by Taper in recent years. First of all, while the only live recordings from this period were incomplete radio broadcast soundboard recordings and audience sources with poor sound quality, this is the first time that an audience recording that can be said to be A-rank at the time has appeared, and the performance is a complete reproduction of the day for two and a half hours. Then, just before saying goodbye to ECM and entering the Geffen era, Metheny’s performances were developed in a way that made us feel he was taking on new challenges, and in particular, the participation of South American multi-player Pedro Aznar added width and depth to the sound, and the grand live performance seemed to open the door to the Metheny world in the future. In addition to the many songs from the album, the album “The Falcon and the Snowman,” a collaboration with David Bowie, was also a hot topic at the time, so “Chris,” an instrumental version of “This Is Not America,” which was a hit with Bowie’s vocals, was played, and in the second half, a vocal number with a chorus group was also performed, so the whole album is worth listening to. Moreover, this year, the band also performed in Japan with almost the same members, making it a memorable piece for fans.
