Description
The dream duo album “Metheny-Mehldau” by Metheny, who was the top guitarist in the jazz/fusion world at the time, and Mehldau, who was the number one young pianist, was released in 2006 and received rave reviews. The following year, in 2007, the two released a new album under their own names, this time with the addition of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard from Mehldau’s regular trio, titled “Quartet”. This is the first two-disc set to feature the complete 1 hour 40 minute performance in Bonn, Germany in June from the rare European tour of 2007, which was less frequent than the US tour, performed by the same quartet that accompanied that masterpiece! First, Metheny and Mehldau performed three songs as a duo, including “I’ll Remember April,” one more song than in the early US tour, then Granadia joined in the tear-jerking romantic fourth song, “Find Me in Your Dreams,” and then Ballad joined in to form a quartet, performing “A Night Away,” a Metheny/Mehldau collaboration that opened the previous “Quartet.” Metheny, playing elegant guitar with a full-acoustic guitar, and Mehldau, boasting his brilliant technique, were already at their full throttle, playing “Silent Movie,” also written by Metheny, and in the second half, they performed the up-tempo “Ring of Life,” which showed off the quartet’s talents. A technician that even Chick Corea fell in love with, Ballard’s off-beat drums and Granadier’s bass are intricately intertwined, and even with the addition of Mehldau’s even more complex piano, the fast tempo remains perfectly in sync, and Metheny cuts into the solo with his amazing technique, while Mehldau’s fingers dance wildly with their own will, making you marvel at his astounding playing! Next, Metheny plays not only Picasso but also various guitars such as guitar synths, such as the magnificent “The Sound of Water” featuring Metheny’s “Picasso” and “Towards the Light” from “Quartet”. Of course, Mehldau’s piano also plays with a graceful touch and tension from start to finish, and the outstanding combination of Granadier and Ballard, which he has cultivated over the years, is also perfect! And the last part is a duet between Metheny and Mehldau again, and the curtain closes on a grand, fantastical, and peaceful performance, as if listening to a classical concert…!
