Description

The dream duo album “Metheny-Mehldau” by Metheny, who was the top guitarist in the jazz/fusion world at the time, and Mehldau, who was attracting attention as the number one young pianist, was released in 2006 and received rave reviews. The following year, in 2007, they released “Quartet” again under their own names, this time with the addition of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballad from Mehldau’s regular trio. This two-disc set is a complete recording of the performance at the Paramount Theater in Denver in March, recorded in high quality stereo sound, from the first US tour of 2007 with the same quartet that accompanied that masterpiece! It starts with a duo of just Metheny and Mehldau, and from the third song, they move on to a quartet performance. They immediately perform “A Night Away”, a Metheny/Mehldau co-written song that opens the previous “Quartet”. Metheny, who plays elegant guitar with a full-acoustic guitar, and Mehldau, who boasts brilliant technique, are already in full swing, playing the up-tempo “Ring of Life,” which shows off the quartet’s talents, sandwiched between “Silent Movie,” also written by Metheny and included in “Quartet.” Jeff’s off-beat drums and Larry’s bass, which are intricately intertwined, and even with Mehldau’s complex piano, the tempo remains fast and in sync. Metheny cuts into a solo with great technique, and Mehldau’s fingers dance wildly with their own intentions, which is simply amazing! In the second half, Metheny plays not only Picasso but also various guitars such as guitar synths, making a big impact, such as the magnificent “The Sound of Water” featuring Metheny’s “Picasso” and “Towards the Light” from “Quartet.” After that, the highlight of the concert was the masterpiece “VERA CRUZ” by Milton Nascimento, a great singer-songwriter who is a great pride of Brazil and who I personally love. The contrast between the bright Brazilian rhythm of the original and the sad, heart-wrenching melody left a vivid atmosphere, and the quartet’s thrilling performance was unique to this quartet. In this number, each of the members gradually heats up, and the solo playing by Mehldau, Metheny, and Jeff is nothing short of magnificent! After one song, the last song was a duet by Metheny and Mehldau, and the magnificent and fantastic “Make Peace” that made it feel like listening to a classical concert was a peaceful end!
