Description

In 2011, NIGHT RANGER released the masterpiece “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA” with Joel Hoekstra, the current member of WHITESNAKE. The original recording that allows you to experience the best of their performance in Japan is now available. This work is recorded at the “Namba Hatch performance on June 9, 2011”. This is the best audience recording. Since the restart, they have been coming to Japan regularly, but during the Hoekstra era, they performed twice, 10 times in 2008 and 2011. First of all, let’s look back at the schedule at that time and check the show’s position. “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA” released on June 8th June 9th: Osaka Namba Hatch ←★This work★ June 10th: Nagoya Bottom Line June 12th: Yamano Music Main Store JamSpot (unplugged performance) June 13th: Shibuya C.C.Lemon Hall June 14th: Shibuya C.C.Lemon Hall All five performances. “June 12th” was an unplugged special performance for invited guests only, but the remaining four performances were regular live shows. The Osaka performance of this work was the first day of his visit to Japan, the day after the release of his new work “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA”. The sound of this work recorded at such a show is truly superb. After all, the one who made this work is Mr. “Western Japan’s Strongest Taper”, who is familiar to us at our store. He is a modern master who is second to none when it comes to recording HR/HM, and his best garden is none other than “Namba Hatch”. I had high expectations for this super famous recording, but it was still so wonderful that I sighed. It has a thick and meaty core, a close contact with zero distance, a sense of separation that does not mix no matter how much the twin harmonies and choruses overlap, and an other-dimensional sense of ease of listening where there is no noise around but only the closed room feeling of the club is delicious. If you have noticed this article, you may have experienced the work of “Mr. Strongest”, but this work also does not taint the gold signboard… no, it is a super masterpiece that I would even say is better than ever. The superb sound that can be said to be more than a sound board is drawn, and the momentum of “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA” is doubled by the stage tension in a full show. Although the Joel era lasted for six and a half years, only acoustic was left as an official live performance, so it is a good opportunity to organize the set here. Classics (12 songs) Dawn Patrol: Sing Me Away/Eddie’s Comin’ Out Tonight/Don’t Tell Me You Love Me Midnight Madness: Touch of Madness/When You Close Your Eyes/Sister Christian/(You Can Still) Rock In America Seven Wishes: Sentimental Street/Goodbye/Four in the Morning Big Life: The Secret of My Success Damn Yankees: Coming of Age 2010s (5 songs) Somewhere in California: Rock ‘N Roll Tonite/Growin’ Up in California/Lay It on Me/No Time to Lose Ya High Road: L.A. No Name … and so on. The balance is “2/3 classics + 1/3 new songs”, but the new songs on “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA” are the ones that are attracting attention. Although it was the day after the album was released, they started with “Rock ‘N Roll Tonite” and interweaved it in between the classics. It felt completely natural, and the soaking melody and lively groove were the same as in the past. The extremely rare “No Time to Lose Ya,” which is thought to have been premiered on this day, has a super catchy melody that will never disappear once you hear it. The “NIGHT RANGER” has been revived beautifully. The key to this is undoubtedly Joel Hoekstra. He draws the classics without any sense of incongruity, and the light and beautiful twin solo of the new song “Growin’ Up in California” is played with a crisp and uplifting feeling. The NIGHT RANGER of the Hoekstra era was truly amazing. After that, Hoekstra moved to WHITESNAKE and became well-known, but to be honest, it was NIGHT RANGER where he really shone. This is an electric live album from the Hoekstra era that was not possible with the official work. Yes, the quality of this work is at a level where it can even serve as an “official substitute”. This is a new masterpiece that I would like to recommend to those who experienced the scene at that time and those who missed it. The best audience recording of the “Namba Hatch performance on June 9, 2011”. This is a masterpiece by our familiar “Western Japan’s Strongest Taper”, with a thick and meaty core, a close contact with zero distance, a separate feeling that does not mix no matter how much the twin harmonies and choruses overlap, and an other-dimensional sense of ease of listening where there is no surrounding noise at all but only the closed room feeling of the club is delicious… everything is the best. You can enjoy the precious new songs of “SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA” and the classics revived by Hoekstra’s guitar. This is a new masterpiece that serves as the “official substitute” of the electric live album from the Hoekstra era that could not be realized in the official work.
