Description
This is a nearly complete 90-minute recording of a live performance at Howard University in Washington on April 13th, 1973, when Miles Davis’ band was the largest in history with 10 members and Lonnie Liston Smith was still in the band. First of all, Pete Cosey joined the band a week before and appeared in front of the audience for the first time as a 10-member band. Since then, Lonnie Liston Smith has only participated five times on the record, so it’s great to be able to listen to this precious live performance with such high quality until the end. And the crazy live performance unique to 1973 exploded again on this day, starting with “Turnaroundphrase” and gradually moving into a chaotic dark world as the members’ sounds gradually overlap. Although Lonnie Liston Smith would later become active in the jazz/fusion scene in the mid-to-late ’70s with albums such as “Cosmic Funk,” he did not yet have a particularly distinctive presence on this album. However, his characteristic playing can be heard in the funky keyboard solos that take place amid the chaos of the middle part of the album, and this, too, makes this a valuable recording for fans.
