Description

This is a recording of the 1970 Electric Factory performance. 1970 was a transitional period for the Miles Band, with many band members coming and going from 1973 to 1975. In the beginning, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and Airto Moreira were joined by John McLaughlin, and by April Wayne Shorter was replaced by Dave Grossman. Then, at the Fillmore performance in June, Keith Jarrett joined, forming a twin keyboard lineup with Chick Corea. Around the time of the Isle of Wight in August, Gary Bartz replaced Grossman. After that, Chick left, Keith became a dual-wielder of electric piano and organ, and Dave Holland was replaced by Michael Henderson in this Electric Factory performance. These members went on to a four-day Cellar Door performance in December, and the so-called “Cellar Door Sessions” took place, which was compiled by Teo Macero and included in the masterpiece “Live Evil” as is well known. The full version of the “Cellar Door Sessions” was later released as an official box set, which is also one of the most popular Miles box sets. Incidentally, the following year the drummer changed from DeJohnette to Leon Chancler, and the percussion changed from Airto to a twin arrangement of Don Alias and Mtume, so you can enjoy a different performance from Miles in 1970 no matter where you cut it. This Electric Factory performance has been released several times in the past, and there are several types of recordings. The recording recorded this time is, so to speak, the “most natural”. Although this recording is a soundboard, there is an electrical noise called “beep” especially at the beginning. In this mastering, extreme noise reduction was avoided in order to preserve the original frequencies, so I think the noise is relatively louder than in previous titles. As for the editing, there were missing parts in “DIRECTIONS” and “WHAT I SAY” from the beginning, and in many past titles, the missing parts were filled in with other sound sources, but this time, because we insisted on using only the original sound sources, we did not make any unreasonable fillings and only edited the connections so that it would not sound unnatural. Therefore, the recording time is about 2 minutes shorter than the titles that claim to be “complete”. From the editing content described above, you may feel that the recommendation is weak, but as mentioned above, the biggest recommendation point is “natural”. A dish that pays close attention to good ingredients and cooks them with the minimum necessary care. Our VDD label does not shy away from bold cooking methods depending on the title, but this is the conclusion we arrived at after examining the materials this time. It’s a stiff explanation, but I think you’ll understand if you listen to it. There is a bit of noise at the beginning, but you will be swept away by the overwhelming performance in no time. After “DIRECTIONS” and “HONKY TONK”, you will notice that you have to change the disc at the end of “WHAT I SAY”, which is a super heavyweight that starts with drums, and then “SANCTUARY”. If they had supplemented it with another sound source, this raging flow would never have been born. It comes with a DVD containing the footage of the same day. To be honest, the footage is bad. Don’t get your hopes up. The sound source of the sound board is on the blurry VHS video, but the sound source used here is different from the main part, and it is particularly noticeable that it is a compensation for the missing part of the latter half of “DIRECTIONS”. This DVD alone is not a product, but having it together with the main part will definitely increase its documentary value. In addition, this video is circulated as November 17th and is written as the 17th, but the performance itself is the same as the main part (November 15th). There is no menu screen. DISC 1 01.
