Miles Davis/Germany 1991 S & V

A set of two CDs featuring the best broadcast recordings of the historic live stage held in midsummer in Paris in 1991, featuring all of Miles’ students, and footage of the live performance broadcast on French cable TV, will be a delight for jazz fans. About 20 years ago, there was a CD called “Black Devil” that used recordings made on cassette decks brought in by audience members at the live venue, but the sound quality was not satisfactory, probably due to the limitations of audience recording. Later, a “Definitive Version” was released with all songs recorded on soundboard sound sources, but the narration overlapped on nine of the 15 songs, and some songs also had loud noise, so this was also a dissatisfying title. The latest release is Devil or Enjol, said to have the highest sound quality ever, and comes with a DVD produced from a different master source than the previous DVDs, so you can see Miles’ students Wayne Shorter, Steve Grossman, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zavierne, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Al Foster, Dave Holland, Bill Evans, Darryl Jones, and others having fun playing with the great Miles. It’s likely that many enthusiasts will be moved to tears by the sight of the energetic Meisl, who can’t believe that Miles passed away about two months after this live performance.
