Description

The legendary live performance that only a very small number of collectors could hear is finally being released!! It is said to be Al Foster’s best performance in the Miles Band after his comeback, and Miles’s blowing in all directions is outstanding, and the day has finally come when you can hear the raging performance that makes all the members roar!! As soon as the miraculous comeback album “The Man with the Horn” that fans all over the world have been waiting for was released, Miles first appeared at Kicks in Boston for four days from June 26th to 29th, 1981, as if nothing had happened, and then performed in New York, and quickly started his live activities in earnest. Listening to all of these concerts in order, you can clearly see how the young Marcus Miller, Mike Stern, Bill Evans, and Mino Cineru, who were unknown and still developing at the time and had shining talents like diamonds in the rough, called the “Comeback Band” that Miles has been known for since the John Coltrane era, have grown at an astonishing speed with each performance. Also, Al Foster, who has supported Miles’ band since the 70s, has formed the traditional Miles sound by playing sharp beats like a different person who has overcome his doubts like a fish in water, as if the slump after Miles’ retirement was a lie, proving that the emperor, charisma, and Miles magic are still alive and well. The 1981 tour of the Miles Comeback Band was only in the United States and Japan, and Miles’ health was unstable, so it is now considered a warm-up, and it will be the following year, 1982, when he will embark on a full-scale world tour in his perfect condition. The European tour, which began in Stockholm on April 14, 1982, continued almost every day, and this album is a complete recording of the first and second sets of the live performance at the Kongresshalle in Hamburg, Germany on April 16, 1982, which was said to be a phantom recording that had never been available to the public until now, over 80 minutes in high quality with careful mastering by the label. In particular, the performance was the heaviest during this tour, and the raging development of the second set is a thrilling and tingling masterpiece that rivals the Miles Group of 1974-5! ! The cover of this album also features a rare photo of Miles holding (playing) his guitar, which is the second time since the popular “Unknown Sessions Vol. 4”! And the guitar is an Explorer! The crucial difference between 1981 and 1982 is that Miles has completely recovered his form and is now able to fully demonstrate his abilities as a trumpeter, which allows the other members to demonstrate their abilities without worrying too much about their boss, and the high musicality and technique of the comeback band are apparent, making it clear that this band was no ordinary band after all. Starting with the impactful drums of Al Foster, Marcus Miller supports the bottom, Mike Stern fills in the gaps, Mino Cineru adds makeup, and on top of that Bill Evans and Miles improve freely. The set list is almost the same every day of this tour, but the performance at this Hamburg performance, especially the second set, was simply intense! It’s no exaggeration to say that this was Al Foster’s best performance with his comeback band. After a long solo like a heavy rock band drummer, “Fat Time” started with a different pattern of intro. It was so cool! Also, Miles in the hidden masterpiece “Ife” that evolved while creating a 70’s atmosphere, the way he continued to play long and long with his imagination overflowing from the middle part became 4 beats is simply overwhelming! Marcus also played heavy bass like an earthquake, forming a heavy rhythm with Al, and oh, let’s not forget! Mike strumming his guitar like a rock star like magma erupting, Bill blowing intensely, is it okay to play so intensely? There’s a live show in Frankfurt tomorrow! And the next day, Sora Mico said that during the European tour that took place every day from April to May, the Frankfurt performance was the lowest performance of Miles’ comeback band, hmm! (First Set) 1. BACK SEAT BETTY 2. MY MAN’S GONE NOW 3. AIDA (Second Set) 1. IFE 2. FAT TIME 3. JEAN PIERRE Miles Davis – trumpet, electric piano Bill Evans – soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute, electric piano Mike Stern – guitar Marcus Miller – electric bass Al Foster – drums Mino Cinelu – percussion
