Description

In the fall of 1956, after touring the US with his big band, Miles toured Europe for the first time, and this recording of his show in Hamburg, Germany on November 7th was taken from a soundboard of a radio recording that had been aired in recent years. This is a rare live recording from the 1950s that has not been available in circulation until now, and it is a package tour, and it was recorded in France, with a luxurious lineup of musicians, including Lester Young and Bud Powell, backed by the Rene Urtreger Trio, who are familiar from the soundtrack of “Elevator to the Gallows” released the following year in 1957. Miles takes the initiative in five songs, and especially on “Tune Up” he plays with all kinds of techniques and plays with joy, and on other numbers his lively playing in his younger days is impressive, and the historic collaboration with Lester Young on “Oh! Lady Be Good” is a must-listen take. Bud Powell’s piano solos “Autumn In New York” and “I Want To Be Happy” are also excellent, and the last three songs are performed by Lester Young. Although the last part fades out because it is a broadcast recording, the performances by Lester Young and others are valuable, and it is a historic excavation recording from before the recording of “EUROPEAN TOUR ’56” in which Miles Davis participated, which was previously released by Fresh Sound, so this collector’s edition is a must-have for fans. 01. el sino (ammons) 02. tune up (davis) 03. four (davis) 04. yesterdays (kern) 05. walkin’ (carpenter) 06. three little words (ruby) 07. oh! lady be good (gershwin) 08. autumn in new york (duke) 09. i want to be happy (youmans) 10. jumpin’ with symphony sid (young) 11. polka dots and moonbeams (van heusen) 12. lester leaps in (young) -fade out- [Recorded at Festhalle A, Planten & Blomen, Hamburg, Germany, 7th November 1956 : soundboard recording] Miles Davis – tp (track 2,3,4,5,7), Lester Young -ts (track 6,7,10,11,12), Bud Powell – piano solo (track 8, 9), Rene Urtreger – p, Pierre Michelot – b & Christian Garrot – dr
