Description
In 1981, the “comeback band” that led the miraculous return of the great Miles Davis, the astonishing newcomers Mike and Bill, stunned the whole world. Now, 40 years later, the latest live performance by these soul brothers has arrived in superb quality! As we overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, artists such as the Stones, Clapton, Brian Wilson, Crimson, and Herbie Hancock have returned to the stage in earnest overseas since this fall, and music fans are gradually returning to their long-awaited daily lives. Meanwhile, our eternal young leader Mike Stern and his powerful duo of 40 years, Bill Evans (like Herbie and Shorter, who were also from Miles’ band), just held their latest live performance at the Mom Cultural Center in Budapest, Hungary on August 19, 2021. The live performance lasted more than an hour and a half, and was recorded in superb high-quality stereo sound with careful mastering by the label. The two-disc set has already arrived! The concert started with a duet between Mike and Bill, followed by “Tumble Home,” and the hard and intense solos unique to the rock generation of Evans and Stern exploded early. The signature model, based on a Telecaster that is instantly recognizable as Stern’s, has a unique sound that is created by adding a slightly shifted effect sound from the original sound, creating a chorus-like effect, and the hard-hitting, energetic Stern is more energetic than usual. Liebman studied under Dave Liebman, the most memorable saxophonist in the Miles Davis group in the 70s, and played a major role in Miles’ group in the 80s. Liebman is also a master of tenor and soprano, and is also excellent at keyboards, inherited from his father, who was said to be a genius of classical piano, and is now his mentor. Before he turned 18, Evans had performed with Gillespie, Nat Adderley, Peter Erskine, and others, and was especially valued by Freddie Hubbard. Since 1984, he has been based in New York, and has worked with Mike Evans, Di Meola, Steve Kahn, Randy Brecker, Junior Cook, and others. He has quickly become the number one top acoustic and electric bassist on the East Coast. Tom Kennedy, who has the best technique imaginable today, has wild phrases and a deep bass sound, and John McLaughlin, born in 1986, has played with Evans, Di Meola, Steve Kahn, Randy Brecker, Junior Cook, and others. In the fourth dimension, they beat out a fierce rhythm with the super technical bassist Etienne Mbappe, and also have other drummers such as Mike Mainieri, Pirelli Lagrene, Jim Baird, Candy Dulfer, and others. Nicholas Biccaro, who is currently in high demand as the best drummer in many sessions, combines his countless hand movements like a thousand-armed Kannon with his tight drums to perfectly support the band with a huge swell of overwhelming power. All the members have experience in many sessions and are familiar with all genres of music, so the wide range of grooves that only they can produce is also a highlight! From “Wishing Well”, “Common Ground”, and the encore “Red House”, the group’s groove and individual playing are both in top form, as they are full-throttle throughout the entire album. But Mike and Bill are always so cool!
