Description
This is the one and only complete broadcast version of the Tokyo Dome concerts held on March 22nd and 23rd from Mick’s first solo tour in Japan in 1988, recorded over 1 hour and 25 minutes, including commercials, and broadcast on March 27th while Mick was still in Japan. This Tokyo concert is right after the third day of the Osaka concert on the CD, so it’s a good title to enjoy in chronological order. This take is not to be missed as it is the first recording of the much talked about trailer spot that was aired a few minutes before the main broadcast began. It starts with Mick’s greeting, and while it is the ultimate digest, it also includes plenty of footage other than the stage from his visit to Japan. Among other things, the scene where Mick apologizes for catching a cold and canceling the Osaka concert on the day of the live performance was valuable. (Since that was all the footage that was aired before the actual broadcast, I thought that the program would show a long video of other performances, but at the time, I was disappointed that none of them appeared at all.) As the live performance has been well-known since then, the tight sound backed by masters such as Simon Phillips and Joe Satriani has a different charm from the Stones, and it still hasn’t faded even now. It was really fortunate that I was able to hear Mick’s solo stage and songs such as “Throwaway” and “Party Doll”, and contrary to the evaluation at the time, these songs were also popular at the live performance. By the way, the broadcasting side must have paid attention to Phillips’s baby face, and the editing was interesting in that he was photographed more than any other member other than Mick. However, Mick himself could not hide the feeling of having just recovered from an illness due to the reasons mentioned above, and the songs continued to be too monotonous from “Gimme Shelter”. Moreover, in this song, Mick appeared from the mixer area and weaved his way back through the audience to return to the stage, but Mick’s agitation could not be hidden from the chaotic situation that was so far beyond the scope of “Let Me Go” in 1981 (laughs). The next day, as if he had learned his lesson, the performance of crossing the audience seats was of course no longer there (he appeared from the wings of the stage for this song on the 23rd), but instead, the next day there was a surprise appearance by Tina Turner, who was visiting Japan at the same time, and these two songs are one of the great highlights of the second half of the show. (By the way, on the 27th, Mick appeared as a guest on Tina Turner’s stage and performed a duet of Honky Tonk Women.) And above all, the way the venue was united in excitement at the Stones’ visit to Japan at last was so exciting that it even surpassed the Stones’ time two years later. I would like to reevaluate the Japan-conscious performance in “Sympathy For The Devil”. As mentioned at the beginning, one of the features of this disc is that it includes all the commercials that were broadcast on the day, but of course these do not affect the content of the performance and have nothing to do with Mick’s live performance itself, but watching the entire broadcast at that time brings back the bubble atmosphere and is full of nostalgia. I’m sure many people were happy to record the long-awaited visit of Mick to Japan, but among the commercials that appear in between, there are many images of the strongest boxer at the time, who was in his prime, and even images of a person who was supposed to be an actor but later came to Japan pretending to be a boxer (lol) and created the legend of the cat-beckoning punch, making this a DVD that allows you to enjoy the atmosphere unique to 1988, which is truly nostalgic in every sense. Of course, it comes with the original menu. “IN TOKYO DOME Broadcast 1988 Unedited Version” is a recording of the entire program with all the commercials included, including the TV broadcast footage of the Tokyo Dome performance in March. This is a unique and valuable software that allows you to enjoy the program itself, which was broadcast on March 27, 1988, from start to finish in high quality.
