Description
This live performance was recorded on November 7th at the Lausanne Jazz Festival in Switzerland, as part of the Euro tour accompanying the release of his solo album “Tales from the Hudson” in 1996. The performance was recorded on stereo soundboard from the local FM on-air master. The performance was performed by a quartet consisting of the talented members Joey Calderazzo (p), James Jinas (b), and Jeff Watts (dr), and the interplay that could not be expressed in studio recordings exploded throughout the album, with Michael’s powerful tenor playing at the center. Unlike his previous works, this album was a pure acoustic jazz work that completely changed from the electric sounds such as programmed music, so this live performance started with the first song on the album, with a thrilling development and Michael’s comfortable solo. The second song, which follows, is also medium tempo like the album, and features an orthodox solo line. In addition, “African Skies,” which had an excellent solo by McCoy Tyner on the album, is performed with the usual lively outphrases, and the battle with Joey Calderazzo’s piano is also a highlight of the entire album. 1.
