This collector’s edition, newly compiled in 2025, features rare recordings from Madonna’s pre-debut days, from her band days in 1979 to her 1981 demo tracks, including some never-before-seen recordings. As Madonna’s Anthology Collection Vol. 1, this title chronicles her career from her move to New York in 1978 to her major label debut in 1983. Disc 1 includes seven tracks, including the “Stephen Bray Demo” that secured her a major label contract in 1981, the original versions of “Everybody” and “Burning Up” that appeared on her debut album, and “Ain’t No Big Deal,” a potential debut single. It also includes four demos from her time with her first manager, Camille Barbone, under Gotham Management, as well as studio recordings from the same period, documenting her transition from rock to dance-pop. Disc 2 features recordings from her pre-solo band days, including Emmy and the Emmys, which ended its short-lived run in 1980, and The Breakfast Club, where she first joined as drummer in 1979. Formed by Madonna herself as the leader and guitarist, Emmy and the Emmys had a rough-and-ready New Wave/punk-oriented style that echoed influences from Blondie and the Pretenders, and the young Madonna’s vivid singing and playing are a must-listen for every album. Also included is her first band, The Breakfast Club, where she moved to New York and initially joined as drummer, but also left behind demo recordings of original compositions and lead vocals, showcasing a glimpse of her talent. These recordings, previously only available in fragments or fragments, have been newly discovered and mastered, resulting in improved quality. The disc also includes unedited extended recordings and previously unreleased material.
