Description

Mike Millard, an absolute master who loved jazz/fusion as well as rock. Here is the superb live album of Lenny White, left behind by him. This work is recorded on the “April 2, 1976 Huntington Beach performance”. It is a superb audience recording of two performances on one day at the now-defunct legendary club “Golden Bear”. Speaking of 1978, two works, “PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES” and “STREAMLINE”, were released, but the latter was not produced until July 1978. This work was about three months before that. It was a concert accompanied by the master Marcus Miller, who would also participate in “STREAMLINE”. Lenny’s live recording itself is valuable, but this work is a superb sound that is even more valuable. It is a work by the absolute master Millard, so it is natural that it is superb, but this work is superb even by that standard. The reason for this is the venue. The capacity of the Golden Bear is about 300 people, which is even smaller than the Roxy (500 people capacity) that Millard uses. This work has a strong sense of closed room and closeness, and it is very close. The on core is powerful and full of the feeling of being in front of you, and the fineness of the details and the wonderful sense of separation make you forget the fact that it is a spatial recording. It is truly worthy of being called “like a sound board”, but if you say it simply, it would be disrespectful to the recording. The reality that you can see the body of the instrument vibrating in front of you is different, and no matter how powerful it is, it does not freak out at all and the glossy beauty is enormous. It is more official class than sound board class… no, it is a sound quality that is not inferior to even studio masterpieces. The sound world that can be said to be the essence of Millard sound is depicted in two performances that seem to be a concentrated and reduced version of Lenny’s solo career. This work is a three-disc set of “DISC 1 = Early Show” and “DISC 2/3 = Late Show”, but in fact, there are no overlapping songs at all in these two stages, and it doesn’t feel strange to listen to it as a long live album of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Here, let’s organize the two sets together. Adventures of Astral Pirates Theme For Astral Pirates / Pursuit / Mandarin Warlords / Universal Love / Assault Others Eros Planet: Mating Drive / Chicken Fried Steak Big City: And We Meet Again / Big City / Sweet Dreamer Others: Sunset Burgundy / Sorceress … and so on (Looking at the track list below, it seems that “Theme For Astral Pirates” is played at both shows, but the early show is a SE tape that announces the start of the show). While the album is composed of the repertoire of his three solo albums, the axis is his latest work at the time, “PRESENTS THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES”. The style is interwoven with “Sorceress” from RETURN TO FOREVER and a cover of Bobby Humphrey’s “Sunset Burgundy”. “Sunset Burgundy” is a song from Humphrey’s “FREESTYLE” in which Marcus also participated. Speaking of the combination of Lenny and Marcus, there was also “Egypt” from “BIG CITY”, but it was not included on this day. On the other hand, it is also a luxurious live album that is like a re-recording of Lenny’s solo album with Marcus. When you think of “Millard’s fusion work”, RETURN TO FOREVER’s “SANTA MONICA 1977” comes to mind, but this work is a masterpiece that is as good as that super masterpiece. No, considering the rarity of Lenny’s solo live and the collaboration with Marcus Miller, it is even more important than that. It is a cultural heritage that I would like to see officially released as it is. A superb audience recording of the “Golden Bear performance on April 2, 1976”. A three-disc set that contains two performances on one day, and the sound by the absolute master Mike Millard is as wonderful as the official studio work. There is not a single song that overlaps between the two performances, and it is also a super luxurious live album that re-records the repertoire of Lenny’s three early solo works with an ensemble including the master Marcus Miller. It is a cultural heritage that I would like to see officially released as it is.
