Description

April 30th was the final day of the first leg of Led Zeppelin’s 1977 US tour at the Pontiac Silverdome. Despite the glorious glory of the mammoth concert that broke the record for the number of spectators at a rock concert in the US, the fact that it was a huge indoor venue caused a disaster, and as expected, the only audience recording that exists on this day has a distant sound image. Even so, although an item called “HOT RODS IN PONTIAC” had been released in the past, the combination of the feeling of gene drop and pitch deviation that occurred due to repeated dubbing, which is common in cassette trade, made it even more difficult to obtain a sound source for enthusiasts. After more than 20 years, a version called “2nd gen.” of this sound source appeared on the Internet, and “PONTIAC SILVERDOME 1977” was released three years ago based on that. For the first time, the pitch was accurately recorded, and enthusiasts were highly praised for finally “having a Pontiac 77 that they could listen to.” However, last month, a different transfer version of the Pontiac 77 suddenly appeared on the Internet, surprising enthusiasts around the world. The information on the cassette was unexpectedly bland (lol) and the generation was said to be “unknown”. However, when the lid was opened, the sound quality was clearly improved compared to the previous “2nd gen.”. It was surprising enough that such a new version appeared quietly with little information on the sound source, but it was released by the “Dogs of Doom” team, who have continued to unearth amazing sound sources such as “ATLANTA POP FESTIVAL 1969” and Jimmy’s “ARMS LOS ANGELES 1983” this year, so it’s no surprise. Of course, this time it is still a sound source for enthusiasts, but the sound quality has improved dramatically. The team made some adjustments, including removing noise, when releasing it, but this upper feeling was only achieved because the original sound source itself was in good condition. If you compare this version with “PONTIAC SILVERDOME 1977” (hereinafter referred to as “previously released version”), you will notice a big difference. First of all, there is no “jirijiri” noise or distortion that was present on the previous version, and the hiss noise has also been greatly reduced. For example, in quiet scenes such as Johnsy’s piano improvisation in “No Quarter” and the first half of “Ten Years Gone”, the previous version had a fairly large hiss noise, but this version has been wiped out. The sound quality itself is completely different in the first place, and compared to the previously released version, which had a rough and rough texture throughout, this time the sound quality has changed drastically to an extremely natural and warm sound quality. I wonder if that natural listening comfort can only be felt if the sound source itself is in good condition. In addition, there is no trouble with the opening “The Song Remains The Same” falling into mono at around 1:59 on the previously released version, and above all, there are many parts where the recording time has been extended compared to the previously released version. In the first place, the scene before the band appeared on stage was 8 seconds long. But the best part was Bonzo’s “Over The Top”. In the previously released version, the recording ended at the end of the drum solo with the effect added before the ending, and from there Plant was connected to the MC praising Bonzo. However, this time the missing ending part was also recorded firmly, that is, it was a complete recording! Indeed, in the previously released part, it will be reminded that the flow from this cut to Plant’s MC was skillfully connected. As mentioned at the time of the release of the previously released version, this day was the final day of the first leg, and it was also a show where Plant’s high tension stood out. Immediately after the start of the live, he actively spoke to the audience who had packed into the large venue. In addition, the element of the final day where he did not have to save his strength overlapped, and the most passionate singing in the first leg was conveyed even more realistically by this upper version. Still, due to the huge venue and the fact that it was a live performance in the United States, firecrackers were set off in the unrefined “Going To California” and “Stairway To Heaven”. Still, the tension was high, centered around the plant, and the best example of this was the masterpiece “Kashmir” on this day. In addition, because of the sound image with a sense of distance (although it is ironic), there is an advantage that the roughness of Jimmy’s play, which is unique to this period, is not noticeable, and “Ten Years Gone” may be called a masterpiece of the first leg. And because of the vast venue, the photos that remain prove that the stage was photographed to be projected on a screen installed in the venue. In 1977, the number of systems that project the state of the stage on screens and projectors installed in the venue began to increase in American arenas, and such shooting was certainly done from this day to the Capitol Center in Landover. In other words, there is a very high probability that there are professional shots of the 1977 tour other than Seattle in July. The sound image of the live performance, which was held in a venue so large that such equipment was necessary, was recorded from a distant audience, and the condition of the sound source made it difficult to listen to the Pontiac 77. However, this version by the “Dogs of Doom” team is so good that any enthusiast will be amazed at how upper it is, as you can tell at a glance! (Remaster Memo) The pitch is correct, so all that was done was to increase the overall sound pressure.
