In reality, it was a warm-up before the final US tour of 1969, which began in mid-October, and this period could be called a unique period among the live performances of that year. Now, the definitive sound board sound source of the radio broadcast at the Olympia Theater on October 10th has been unearthed and officially released, but before that, it was a period almost shrouded in mystery. Rather, for enthusiasts, it was a period in 1969 when the whole picture was difficult to grasp, a situation that continued for many years, and now it is a nostalgic memory. In such a situation, the only valuable record was the audience recording of the stage at the Lyceum Ballroom in London on the 12th. The nostalgic airship jacket LP with the artist name “Led Zep” credit was the only item for many years, and even after the CD era began, copies were released from it. As expected, items based on the tape appeared later, but at first, they were tapes of unknown genera and were difficult to be CD items, and it was hard to believe that they were a standard in the LP era. It was the release of “LIVE AT THE LYCEUM IN LONDON” from “GRAF ZEPPELIN” that finally put an end to that situation. However, Krw_co recently released the “2nd gen” version. Although the sound source had already reached a level that was very easy to listen to on the GRAF version, this time the sound quality is brighter and clearer. The parts where the cuts occur, especially the finale “How Many More Times” that ends abruptly, are the same as before, but this time the bright and clear sound quality stands out. Compared to previous releases, the clarity that shines on speakers stands out, and beginners will definitely find this version easier to listen to. In addition, the live performance on this day had many developments where the performance became quieter, which also contributed greatly to the ease of listening. Therefore, although it is an audience recording that has been released since the LP era, you will be able to feel it more if you play this version at a loud volume from the speakers. Of course, the pitch that was too slow was also adjusted properly. Another factor that contributed to this unique ease of listening was the calmness of the audience on this day (although the audience who said “NO” when Bonzo’s name was called at the beginning of the live show made me smile wryly). In addition, the inclusion of new songs just before the release, such as “Heartbreaker” and “What Is And What Should Never Be”, may also be related. Nevertheless, the band, including Plant, had a very high level of energy, and as a result, the “UK phenomenon” that continued until 1971, in which “the performance was intense and the audience was quiet,” has already been captured. In fact, “Heartbreaker” and other songs are full of a fresh atmosphere from the intro, while the performance is already intense. The performance has evolved from the Paris radio broadcast, and it is clear that the band is putting the finishing touches on before going to the US. Jimmy’s grunge-like development in the middle of the finale “How Many More Times” is also interesting, and the value of the good audience who captured the ZEP’s powerful performance while carefully exploring before the final US tour of 1969, which is scheduled for one week later, has not yet diminished. And the sound source that was recorded across two discs in the LP era is now crisply contained on one CD, which is also easy to listen to.
