Description

Along with Led Zeppelin’s first appearance at the LA Forum, we are releasing a superb recording from their 1970 spring US tour. Originally, recordings from this tour, other than the opening night in Vancouver (“Pb”), were rare and shrouded in mystery. Rather, it was with the advent of the CD era that many performances were unearthed, and the few recordings from the analog era that conveyed the atmosphere of this tour other than “Pb” were from Tampa in April. Moreover, it was a very easy-to-listen audience recording, so much so that it even spawned a Japanese acetate disc, but many fans probably encountered this recording on the LP “MAKUNDJU,” which was packaged in a jacket featuring Jimmy (from 1983), a completely different era. In fact, the beginning of the live performance is hardly recorded at all, and the recording starts from the end of “Bring It On Home,” but the sound quality is so clear that this is hardly noticeable. Because of its exceptionally clear sound quality, even after the advent of the CD era, many items continued to be produced, starting with the Cobra edition which simply scaled down the LP artwork. However, after that, ‘TAMPA 1970’ reigned as the best, and there were even calls for its re-release. But in recent years, “Dogs of Doom,” who have dedicated themselves to searching for Led Zeppelin recordings, made a major discovery in 2021 by unearthing another source. This was because it included the beginning of the live performance, which had not been heard on items such as ‘MAKUNDJU’. In terms of sound quality, it does not match the clarity of the ‘MAKUNDJU’ source, but it is a powerful and sufficiently easy-to-listen audience recording. On the other hand, there is tape rotation distortion in “What Is And What Should Never Be”. This is noticeable and makes it difficult to listen to. Nevertheless, when this recording was first released, due to its novelty, items were released that spliced it together with the ‘MAKUNDJU’ source without adjusting this part. Also, at the time, the fact that a compilation album combining new sources was postponed due to the timing being before ‘TAMPA 1970’ sold out. Therefore, it was only natural that this release would be the longest version, utilizing both sources to their fullest extent. Before that, the beginning of “What Is And What Should Never Be,” which could now be fully included, has been edited after thoroughly eliminating the distortions in the new source. This alone makes it significantly easier to listen to compared to other items. The ‘MAKUNDJU’ source has also been adjusted to make the organ intro of “Thank You” even easier to listen to. In “Thank You,” a rare moment is captured where Jimmy provides backing vocals, which can only be enjoyed because of the high sound quality. At the LA Forum, it was sung without backing vocals, so this is a valuable moment that seems to be a short-lived experiment introduced in April. More importantly, the appearance of the new source means that this day can now be heard from the opening, which is a huge deal. After all, when it comes to the 1970 spring tour, you want to hear it from “We’re Gonna Groove,” which kicks off the live performance. Moreover, the performance of this song on that day, revealed by the new source, is absolutely phenomenal. The literally explosive opening is breathtaking. The Tampa ’70 recording, which was regrettable for the missing early part of the live show due to its excellent sound quality, has now been transformed into a full version that can be fully enjoyed from the powerful opening. “How Many More Times,” which was even more heated because the venue was not as chaotic as the LA Forum, is also tremendous. The legendary recording from the spring of ’70, which many had been waiting for to be re-released as ‘TAMPA 1970’, has been reborn as the best version in the truest sense of the word! Remaster Notes Using the source released by Dogs of Doom in 2021 (with a running time of just under 60 minutes) as a sub-source, the first half and previously missing parts have been supplemented! It is not a complete recording, but the first 28 minutes or so have been supplemented, and “What Is And What Should Never Be” is included in its complete version! The pitch, which was wobbly in the new source, has been thoroughly adjusted! Naturally, the pitch distortion in the beginning of “What Is And What Should Never Be” has also been corrected.
