Description
The LA Forum 6 Days, the culmination of ZEP’s 1977 tour, was a treasure trove of high-quality sound sources, including Mike Millard, but June 22nd was an exceptional day when the sound sources were not so good. Although there are several audience recordings, none of them are of good quality. That alone would be fine, but the poor sound quality was even more regrettable because ZEP’s performance on this day was so wonderful. Because of the good content, the CD “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT: 4 SOURCE MIX” was based on a file that Mania Weedwacker managed to create the best version by making full use of existing sound sources. Even so, it is still a day with a high hurdle for sound sources, but this day was also included in the sound sources released by The Dogs of Doom team, who achieved energetic sound source excavation at the end of last year. What they released at the end of last year was an upgraded version of “recorder 4”. However, the original was a rough, definitive vintage mono audience, so the generation of the sound source is unknown this time as well. Nevertheless, the sound quality is clearly improved from the part of the same sound source that was the basis for “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT: 4 SOURCE MIX”, and the roughness has been significantly reduced. Although it is basically for enthusiasts, it is still The Dogs of Doom that they have properly upgraded it. Bonzo was outstanding on the most famous “Eddie Day” at the 1977 LA Forum, but the next day, Jimmy’s performance was more intense than his. Among them, “No Quarter”, which was a great performance that lasted over 30 minutes, was wonderful. Although Johnsy took the lead in the first half of the performance, Jimmy and Bonzo’s bargaining continued endlessly from the middle, which was interestingly unique and high-tension, with a “it seems to end but it never ends”. This performance is better than the previous version and easier to listen to… if you are a enthusiast, it is worth trying it. A feature of this sound source is the unique recording state in which Jimmy’s guitar is the most prominent balance, and Robert’s voice is slightly pushed aside. Thanks to that, Jimmy recorded the day when he “played a lot” not only in LA in 1977, but also in the entire 1977 tour. Although the sound quality itself is a bit muffled, it is a relief that the sound image is not “distant” or “roaring”. Thanks to this, Jimmy’s sharp playing on this day was conveyed. In addition, Jimmy was in such good form that it was obvious at first listen, such as the intro of “Achilles Last Stand” and the guitar solo of “Stairway to Heaven”. The Dogs of Doom team released it after deleting the takes of “Kashmir” and “Over The Top” from another day at the LA Forum (probably borrowed from another day because they couldn’t record them) that were mixed in with the cassette they excavated. Therefore, it is not a complete recording, but the fact that it fits on two discs has lowered the hurdle of rough recording. Still, it is still a sound source for enthusiasts, but Jimmy’s play on the ride is still worth listening to. The Forum. Inglewood, CA, USA 22nd June 1977 (UPGRADE) Disc 1 (78:23) 1. Intro 2.
