Following on from “REVENGE IN DAYTON,” the must-listen soundboard for KISS Army is now available again as a 2-CD set! The live rehearsal (run-through) held on September 27, 1992, prior to the start of the “REVENGE” arena tour in October of that year, was recorded from a stereo line-up leaked by a person involved. It’s 111 minutes that can only be heard here, and is of course excellent as a document, but also as entertainment! KISS’s no-makeup days are still enthusiastically supported by fans, just like the original lineup of the ’70s. Among them, the 1992 release “REVENGE” and the tour have a special meaning. The death of Eric Carr in November 1991 shocked all KISS fans and associates, but the band’s new album, which they delivered as a “blow of anger” to the absurd fate and the changing music scene, made it into the Billboard Top 10 (6th place) for the first time since “DYNASTY” during the grunge/alternative boom, and as the album title suggests, they “struck back”. The promotion tour for “REVENGE” was divided into a “club tour” starting from the San Francisco performance on April 23, 1992, which was essentially a warm-up tour, and an “arena tour” from October 1 to late December 1992. In total, more than 70 shows were held in Europe and the United States. Three shows in late November were officially recorded during this “arena tour” and released as the official live album “ALIVE ?”. This also proves that “REVENGE” is an important position for the band. “REVENGE IN DAYTON”, which was recorded on a soundboard leaked from the Dayton, Ohio performance on the same tour, became a hot topic among fans immediately after its release. The sound source that will be released this time is, like “REVENGE IN DAYTON”, a leaked material from a secret route! The rehearsal (one live run-through) on September 27, 1992, prior to the start of the “Arena Tour” in October, was recorded on a stereo soundboard with the best sound quality! In addition to the performance, the conversations between the members and staff, and the voices giving instructions on the production points, this work captures a number of scenes that you would never know with a normal live recording over 111 minutes! This recording starts with the opening SE of the live that was also heard in “REVENGE IN DAYTON”. The warm-up of the guitar and bass can be felt with a very realistic tone. And “Creatures Of The Night”, led by Eric Singer’s drums, is suddenly amazing! Paul’s vocals and guitar, Bruce Kulick’s lead, Gene’s bass and chorus, all the musical tones jump out from the left and right channels with outstanding clarity and clear separation! The depth and stereo feeling in the following “Duece” and “I Just Wanna” are also amazing. There are many soundboard sources leaked by related parties, but I can’t think of anything that is so attractive in terms of sound. It’s that overwhelming (some of the vocals are a bit over-peaked, but that’s also raw)! Another nice point is that you can enjoy “Christeen Sixteen” and “100,000 Years” (rare!), which cannot be heard in “REVENGE IN DAYTON”, and “Cold Gin” with the highest quality line source. In quiet scenes such as between songs, you can feel the crosstalk phenomenon caused by the original master tape (albeit very subtle), but it doesn’t bother you during the performance. Since this is a run-through assuming an actual stage, the members play with the same enthusiasm as in the real performance, and play one song after another in a rush. Eric Singer, in particular, is about to embark on his first large-scale arena tour as an official member of KISS, and he shows off his characteristically careful drumming in each song. Among them, “Parasite” and “War Machine” are worth listening to (it is also interesting to hear him try out the intro to “Strutter” after “Parasite” is played). However, the parts where the drums are played lightly in certain scenes, such as between songs, are very rehearsal-like, and are the highlights. Paul’s light MC of “Thank you, thank you” that can be heard between “Parasite” and “Strutter” is different from the way he incites the audience in an actual live performance. Of course, this is not because the members are simply slacking off, but because they are putting together the production and show-up content while assuming the progress of the show. You can also tell from the fact that after “Strutter” is played, he is interacting with the staff, saying things like “The spotlight is here.” In addition, the conversation “Can we prepare the light for the photo shoot by tomorrow?” will give the listener a realistic mood that seems to be in the world of show business. In addition, in “I Want You”, which includes a drum solo, you can’t miss Paul giving instructions to the staff about the sound at around 5:00 (some parts are cut during this drum solo). And the biggest listening point is the conversation between the members and staff at the beginning of Disc 2. This scene, where they give their opinions on how to play and finish the song, is only about 40 seconds long, but it gives a strong sense of the members’ vivid existence! After this, there are other listening points, such as “Rock And Roll All Nite”, which has an interesting rough singing style, “Tears Are Falling”, where the members discuss how to play, “Detroit Rock City”, which is a rehearsal but a satisfying take, and “The Star-Spangled Banner (re-start)”, which redoes the connection from the ending of “Love Gun”. At the end, the tape ran out, and the recording ended before it was completely finished. The whole album is so amazing that you’ll want to hear more! Fans know that KISS is a true professional entertainment group, despite their flashy appearance and image. From the audio and video footage unearthed so far, their high level of awareness in performance has been more than enough. Still, the “professionalism of the band” seen in this album leaves a strong impression on the listener (it should be noted that at this time, KISS rented out the venue for a week and carefully checked the direction and performance). After listening to this album, if you watch “REVENGE IN DAYTON” or the official live performance and official video, you will feel a different perspective on KISS live performances than before. Since this album is a sound source, you can only hear the “sound”. However, as you listen to the members’ voices and specific instructions that pop out between songs, you can almost see the stage! It feels as if the listener has stepped backstage at the band. This feeling, which is almost impossible to find officially, is the charm of a collector’s item. This work is definitely a super-sized item that comes along once every few years! This is a definitive piece that not only avid KISS fans, but also rock enthusiasts and collectors should definitely take this opportunity to add to their collection!
