Description

Keith, a true genius with rare talent, weaves supremely creative music with his unchanging piano trio, along with his best possible partners, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. Despite the three performances being held in different eras and locations, the consistent aesthetic creates the feeling of listening to a single concert, a one-of-a-kind experience! Truly a work of art! The trio of Keith, DeJohnette, and Peacock first met on the 1977 masterpiece “Tales of Another” under the name of Gary Peacock. In 1983, Manfred Eicher brought them together again, releasing three albums in a row: “Standards Vol. 1,” “Standards Vol. 2,” and “Changes.” Given that the three were leading improvisers in the jazz world, it was surprising to hear them perform traditional, orthodox standards. However, the result was a breath of fresh air, breathed into familiar standards with the unique combination of exceptional technique and innovative approach that no one else had achieved before, transforming them into something completely new, almost entirely original, pieces that received rave reviews worldwide. Since then, they have continued to perform at the forefront of jazz piano trio music for over 40 years, rewriting the history of jazz piano trios. This single-disc set, recorded at the Erkel Theatre in Budapest, Hungary on November 26, 1990, is the final stop on the Keith Trio’s 13-date European tour, which began on November 11 in Paris, France, with meticulous mastering and exceptional sound quality. This is the first release of a title with near-top-quality sound from the Keith Trio’s archive, a collection that is rarely available in high-quality sound. The program features five songs, including “Just Friends,” “I Wish New,” “In Your Own Sweet Way,” “If I Should Lose You,” and “The Meaning of the Blues,” as well as rare compositions. Their fresh interpretations of famous jazz standards, crafted to sound like original trio compositions, are truly a new kind of trio jazz. While they also perform original trio pieces, the boundaries between them are blurred. This performance, which expresses sensitivity, taste, and mutual trust that cannot be expressed through technique alone, can only be achieved when every element is perfectly combined! This blissful performance is imbued with the trio’s sincere aesthetic for music. There are few performances that truly bring such joy just to listen to! The recording features invaluable, high-quality audio, capturing every detail of the trio’s performance. This is a must-listen performance for Keith and standards fans, as well as piano trio and jazz fans!
