John McLaughlin/Austria 1985 Complete Soundboard Edition

While he was actively engaged in various bands and solo endeavors throughout the ’80s, this 79-minute recording features a February 10th concert in Vienna, Austria, from a 1985 European tour with his short-lived unit “Mahavishnu.” This rare live performance, recorded in its entirety via stereo soundboard recording, was digitally rebroadcast in 2025. Naturally, this rare live performance is of a quality that could easily be released as is. First, the five-piece band performance features McLaughlin’s Synclavier guitar, creating a unique style of playing that could not be achieved with conventional guitar or guitar synth, particularly on the signature track “Pacific Express.” The lineup also includes Jonas Hellborg, who released the duo album “Power of Two” the previous year, as well as renowned drummer Danny Gottlieb and Bill Evans, known for his work with Miles Davis.
