Description

On July 3rd, the beginning of the 2nd leg of the 1976 American tour, Detroit recorded the late show of the Masonic Temple performance with an ultra-high quality audience recording. You can fully enjoy the flexible performance that is unique to this period with an amazing level of sound that cannot be achieved any more. (There is a slight omission due to a tape change at Disc2Freeway Jam 3:45) BBA disbanded in 1974, Bernard Purdy joined as a band member in 1975, performed with Mahavishnu Orchestra on tour, and belonged to the same label. Due to his ties with the Young Hammer Group, he performed with the Jan Hammer Group, participated in two songs on UPP’s second album “This Way,” and appeared as a guest on Stanley Clarke’s album, rapidly becoming a jazz-rock/crossover/ This is a time when the band’s fusion orientation is increasing, and this is a perfect ensemble packed with things to listen to. The tour started at the Roundhouse in London on May 23rd (September 12th at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium, Aerosmith jumped in for the encore) and continued for about 40 performances until February 19th, 1977 at Chicago. (The live album “With The Jan Hammer Group Live” was released in March) The set list was impeccably wonderful, from Mahavishnu to Sister Andrea, Jerry Goodman & Jan Hammer’s 1974 release “Like Children” to Country And Eastern Music, Earth (Still Our Only Home), Full Moon Boogie, Darkness – Earth In Search Of A Sun from Jan Hammer’s 1975 release “The First Seven Days”, You Know What I Mean from “Blow By Blow”, From Scatterbrain, Freeway Jam, Diamond Dust, “Wired” to Sophie, Led Boots, and the 1976 release “Oh, Yeah?”, it’s perfect. (Blue Wind incl.Train Kept a Rollin’ at Cape Cod Coliseum on August 27th, Come Dancing, She’s a Woman at Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens on October 15th, Goodbye Porkpie at New York show on October 8th) Hat, etc., I really can’t stand the sets from this period) Anyway, the frightening improvisations performed by all the members are so charming that it can be said that they are all worth listening to, and the interplay that exquisitely intertwines with Tony’s swaying beats. Even non-fans will be amazed at the number of plays. Tony’s high-speed gimmick (especially the sharpness of china etc.) in the Jan Hammer solo part that explodes in the second half is a masterpiece, Sister Andrea, Oh Yeah?, Country And Eastern Music, Jan Hammer and Steve’s 4-verse solo, etc.・Battle, Beck’s explosive fast playing on the high-speed Scatterbrain, the surging improvisation in the second half, (perhaps because the tempo is fast, the breathing doesn’t match and the unison doesn’t match), the rhythm section shows its true potential, and the undulating beat of six consecutive beats. Earth’s interaction with Beck gives me goosebumps, Sophie’s 7 time signature, voicing, and tense arrangement are wonderful, Led Boots’s quite solid (Tony suddenly hits a different pattern on the A melody), etc. You can listen to it all at once without getting bored.
