This collection features wonderful performances centered around the masterpiece “Song for My Father,” which shines brilliantly in jazz history. At the beginning, I mentioned “the originator of soul jazz,” but it’s obvious when you look at the members. Randy Brecker, who became the best trumpet player in soul music in the 70s, Benny Maupin of the Headhunters, Billy Cobham, the key to funky sounds from the Mahavishnu Orchestra to his collaboration with George Duke, and even Joe Henderson, the star saxophonist in the jazz world.
